Tag. I'm it.
I was hoping I would escape this book game meme thing sweeping through the blogosphere since I barely have time to read anything but work-related material. Hell, I still am sitting on the last nine episodes of Desperate Housewives with not a minute to watch them
But wouldn't you know it, John Gushue got me and, not only do I have to answer the questions, I also have to tag five other bloggers. It's like some annoying chain letter -- only it's public so you're shamed into playing along:
Number of books I own: Six Ikea Billy bookshelves worth, double-stacked in my home office. More bookshelves plus a small wall of cookbooks in my basement. Assorted piles in the bedroom and den. Even a few coffee table books in my living room. Too damn many. I have no time to count them and dusting them's a bitch.
Last book I bought: Uh ... this is so embarrassing that I am not telling. Especially since it's the kind of, ahem, self-help book that I have always mocked my girlfriends for buying. It's got "men'' and ''women'' in the title but no planets so it's not that bad. Every guy should read it because it will teach him everything that he needs to know about why women can seem so psycho sometimes. If you email me and are real nice I may tell you the title.
Last book I read: Kitty Kelley's The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty. Actually, I didn't really read it. I listened to an audio version while on the stepmill at the gym.
Five books that mean a lot to me: One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera, both by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, for their beauty. Mordecai Richler's Barney's Version because it's funny, it's about home and it got me through a terrible bout of food poisoning when I was alone and very far from Canada. Two books I have had since childhood: a 1951 Encycopedia Britannica World Atlas, now falling apart it's so well-worn, and a 1948 anthology of poetry and prose called One Thousand Beautiful Things which belonged to my late Aunt Margo. It was the book that made me want to become a writer.
Tag five more: Ghost of a Flea; Recruiting; Blankout Times; Her Kind and Peace, Order and Good Government, Eh?
UPPITY DATE: Peace, Order and Good Government has already been tagged. So I'm taking it to Andrew Rose.
