Has ABC cancelled The One: Making of a Music Star?
That's what's being said on the show's message boards.
No official announcement. Nothing on the wires. I'd call CBC-TV but my sense is, they'd be the last to know. As they say, this one's developing ... or not.
H/t to Sanj.
LATE NIGHT DATE: T'is true. T'is toast. Tsk. Tsk.
There are no plans for additional episodes. Thanks to all who participated in and supported The One!
ABC has TBAs on its sked. No word from CBC on how it plans to plug two and a half hours of prime time holes every week throughout the summer -- or whether the Canadian version will be going ahead.
Still no management splat on the CBC atrium floor.

_Perhaps like an earlier midseason show Hustle, err, I mean Heist - it will be assigned for an accelerated season ending run thru.

Looks like it's true. From the ABC The One website: ""There are no plans for additional episodes. Thanks to all who participated in and supported The One!"

As a CBC employee I am convinced that the current management are succeeding in their clandestine mission to destroy what little is left of CBC Television.
CBC mangement efforts is making CBC more and more irrelevant to all Canadians.
Our only hope(CBC television) is that CTV will buy us and close down their news service so some of us can keep on working.

Our regularly scheduled program "The National" will not be shown at this time.
We regret any inconvenience this may cause.
In its place we will now bring you a previously recorded program of Don Messer's Jubilee.

To quote Agatha Christie, "And then there were none" (except management, of course; they ran the network by themselves last fall, they can dang well do it again).
Or this old chestnut:
They came for the program PR people, but I wasn't a PR person, so I didn't care.
They came for the local news staff, but I wasn't a local news staffer, so I didn't care.
They came for the hosts, but I wasn't a host, so I didn't care (bye, George!).
They came for the writers, but I wasn't a writer, so I didn't care.
They came for the production and operations personnel (except for hockey), but I wasn't a producer or operator, so I didn't care.
Then they came for the managers. No one cared.

I don't care if it lasted only two episodes.
Strombo is still forever estopped from making fun of Ben Mulroney.

Great, CTV buys CBC and what will we getr? Programs on medical devices for old people 24/7 probably, since that is what CTV does best.

If it weren't so sad, I'd say they deserve it.
So the new "reality TV strategy" can't attain liftoff - even with a boost from CBC's "American Idols" in mouseville.
Has US TV style "Reality TV" jumped the shark? I hope so,
It's sad when you decide to be a follower, only to find out you jumped on the rollercoaster when the ride was almost over.
Anyway, who cares - we already have more than enough of this crap on CTV, Global, and the US channels they simulcat,
Rumour has it there's another Reality TV that works really well for public broadcasters - Journalism! But CBC's new Reality programming department wouldn't have a clue about that.
Too bad, because intelligent TV is in short supply.

Any one with half a brain could have seen that coming a mile away. The One was a spinoff of a spinoff.
But wait, I forgot, the people running CBC TV have shown over and over that even half a brain seems to be lacking. Anyone who thinks it's ok to joke with locked out workers about their extended summer vacation has to be a moron.

Still, CBC is going ahead with their version.
As bad as the ABC show was..
... it had high production values.
... A hollyood crew and producers experienced with reality shows.
... some promotion,
Now imagine what CBC's the One is going to look like..
It reminds me of the Junos. CTV took them over -- and injected some life into the show.
Remember the CBC version?
uhg.

At least the shark George was jumping didn't eat him.
But seriously folks, what'll be interesting to watch is what kind of steel Strombo is made of. Anyone can fail spectacularly. Far rarer are those individuals who can recover from such spectacular failure.

It's not George's failure. I'd say he took one for the team. He'll be fine, and that's the way it should be. If you watched all four episodes you could see him doing his best to push the show forward. He belongs on The Hour and he'll be back to that soon enough, no harm done to his career.

George's failure was one of judgement. Prior to The One, his greatest strength was his extensive knowledge of music/popular culture. By hitching himself to this particular vehicle, George now faces potential accusations of being a sellout. Don't get me wrong. I'm one of his biggest fans, but he's managed to tie a pretty hefty millstone around his neck.
