Broadsides by Antonia Zerbisias

  • Antonia Zerbisias, columnist for the Star's Living section, has been telling people what she thinks ever since she could open her mouth. Her career ambition as an opinionator dates back to Grade 9 when a cartoon commentary on a teacher resulted in her suspension from high school. The principal sent her home with a note calling her "rude, obstreperous and bold." Her parents were neither amused, nor surprised. Once she was punished for being that way. Now she makes it pay. And, because she can take it as well as dish it out, she wants to hear what you have to say. Fire away!

Doing time ... out

Not much of a surprise to learn that men are accused of more crimes, and more violent crimes at that, in Canada than are women. Today, Statistics Canada issued a report on the subject, based on 2005 figures.

Females accounted for a small proportion of all alleged offenders in 2005 and, when they did offend, they tended to commit offences such as theft, common assault, bail violations and fraud, according to a new report.

The report showed that females aged 12 and older accounted for about 1 out of every 5 people accused by police services of committing a violation against the Criminal Code. The findings are based on data from a subset of 122 mostly urban police services located in nine provinces.

Almost half (47%) of these females were accused of committing a property crime, while another 28% were accused of committing a violation against a person. In comparison, 39% of males were accused of committing a property offence, and were 34% accused of a violation against a person.

An additional 17% of females were in conflict with police for violations against the administration of justice, such as bail violations and failure to appear in court. The remaining 7% were accused of "other" violations against the Criminal Code (e.g., weapons offences, prostitution).

<SNIP>

Females were far less likely than males to commit homicide, robbery, sexual assault, breaking and entering, motor vehicle theft or mischief.

Rates among females were anywhere from 7 to 10 times lower, depending on the offence. For instance, for every 100,000 females, 13 were accused of robbery. In comparison, the rate for males was 110.

There are so many statistics to be mined here, I think I'll save my analysis for the paying customers of the paper first.

Stay tuned.

So what is new about that, ? are you going to break it down by race, or is that too sensitive a subject for you, easier just to damm all men eh??

The report only mentions race when it comes to aboriginal Indians, you all. So yeah, I will ''break it down by race'' to the extent that it is possible and relevant.

But hey Steve, the report is freely available online. I've even provided the link. So please, don't let me stop you from making your own analysis and interpretation.

"Myth # 2: When women are violent, it is usually in self-defense.

As a general rule, neither men's nor women's violence is usually committed in self-defense. According to Straus, for example, roughly 10 percent of women and 15 percent of men perpetuate partner abuse in self-defense. Dr. David Fontes, author of Violent Touch: Breaking Through the Stereotype, and the director of Stop Abuse for Everyone (SAFE), has also found that only a small percentage of female abusers are acting in self-defense.

Myth #4: Mothers are children's "first line of defense" against child abuse.

In reality it is mothers, not fathers, who commit the overwhelming majority of child abuse, neglect, and parental murder. According to the US Department of Justice, 70% of confirmed cases of child abuse and 65% of parental murders of children are committed by mothers, not fathers.

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, adjusting for the greater number of single mothers, a custodial mother is five times as likely to murder her own children as a custodial father is. A study of confirmed child abuse cases published in the Journal of Child Abuse and Neglect found that mothers abuse their children two and a half times as often as fathers. The Third National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect (1996) found that children are 88% more likely to be seriously injured from abuse or neglect by their mothers than by their fathers."

You go, girls.

One depressing fact I learned in psychopathology was that women were 8 out of 10 times more like to harm a child, either physically, emotionally, sexually or psychologically.

I remember reading that and thinking it was very sad, but also thinking that acts of violence are generally often pretdetermined by proximity to the victim in most cases. Women spend more time around children than men do. That's just a fact.

It's the same reason there is more native on native crime than any other type of crime by racial grouping in Canada... because natives spend more time around other natives than around other ethnic groups.

Human nature at it's worst.. *sigh*

Actually the report does provide a breakdown of female Aboriginal crime rates, no other ethnic group is singled out.

Excerpts pg 11:

"Female adult offenders are more likely to be younger, single and Aboriginal than women in the general population."

"While only 3% of female adults in Canada are Aboriginal, one-quarter of women serving a federal sentence were Aboriginal"

Isn't ethnic profiling verbotten?

Yup Meaghan.
We women are either aborting our fetuses, infanticiding our kids, or eating our young.
It's amazing God gave women the ability to be mothers in the first place, don't ya think?

Geeze Antonia, beyond the apparent sarcasm addressed to Meaghan, what's your point?

Fact is that God also gives murderous female psychopaths (Karla Holmolka!) the ability to procreate. Ditto for the males of our species. Basic biology doesn't guarantee the fitness of either sex when it comes to parenting. We don't need college courses or stats to teach us this either. Truth is many/most of us learn that fact of life from direct experience, the hard way.

Sexism cuts both ways. And our planet is beyond sick with it. Man haters, woman haters. I don't see a difference.

Stats, surveys, polls and the like. All worthless crap imo. All can be twisted to suit any agenda.

And for every generalization or stereotype there are always exceptions, always people who don't fit the moulds.

We've sure come a long way, eh? Not as far as I can see!
