Antonia Zerbisias has been a Star columnist since 1989 but has been telling people what she thinks ever since she could open her mouth. Her career ambition as an opinionator dates back to Grade 9 when a cartoon commentary on a teacher resulted in her suspension from high school. The principal sent her home with a note calling her "rude, obstreperous and bold." Her parents were neither amused, nor surprised. Once she was punished for being that way. Now she makes it pay. And, because she can take it as well as dish it out, she wants to hear what you have to say. Fire away!
worse than what?

We can only hope and work for it to get better :-)

Now, I think I recognize that girl and that dog.
Nah, things'll be fine. Just never say this sentence out loud: Things can't get worse. Just don't say it out loud, and everything will be ok.

Americans don't have the social infrastructure that we do and ordinary middle-class citizens are now both homeless and jobless. And we just elected a government that discounts Canadian values in favour of doing everything de-regulated American-style. We'll need a lot of luck and no natural disasters to reach 2010 in one piece, I'm predicting.

"Canadian values" is a code for "Liberal Party"
Sooey Sweetie, I really expected better from you.
Happy New Year!

No, Canadian values are a result of immigrants from better weather countries realizing they would need to pool their resources and cooperate with each other in order to grow and prosper.
You must have swallowed a fair degree of political party propaganda to be confusing Canadian values with the "natural governing party's" values.
(That was a hint, by the way. You're welcome.)

Sooey Sweetie, I can be a bit dense sometimes.
A hint of what?
With a bit of luck "they" have ceased being the "natural governing party."
In any case "Kanadian Values" are a sort of late excrescence we can do without.

Styggy dearness, perhaps you aspire to good old Pali-Israel values, or maybe Sunni-Shiite values, or, one of my favourites, RC-Protestant values (fantabulous recent examples in Northern Ireland).
After all, what are Canadian values of tolerance, mutual assistance and so forth compared to suicide bombings, kneecappings and all but genocide?

Mozo de Beaux Yeux, (from a shy (as in Icelandic) "Styggy")
To take one of the above conflicts, I’m actually both ethnically and sympathetically with the Ulster Loyalists’ side. The knee-capping is something the other guys do.
Meanwhile, the sort of pinko twit stuff that passes for “Kanadian values” is actually quite new (emerging within the lifetime of the Esteemed and Beautiful Moderator). From the point of view of tradition I actually do prefer the values that made Vimy possible - they can provide the wall behind which we can be tolerant and “inklusive”, as the Israelis are learning and relearning in the face of an onslaught from psycho terrorists who deny their right to exist.
