Holy water and dryer
So further to the papal bull about women's liberation being largely attributable to the invention of the washing machine, this vintage washer-dryer ad which I found on Jezebel.
I'm guessing from the hair and fashion that this was made in the mid-late 50s. You can bet Mad Men -- accent on the men -- dreamed this one up. I wonder how many appliances it sold.
Anyway, thanks Catholic Church for hanging women out to dry ... again.

I suppose the thinking could be that if women were down by the river, pounding the laundry on the rocks they would have less time to ponder silly notions like they have the right to the vote, and go out in public flashing their ankles, driving men to distraction! Mind you, with all that rock pounding, they would also pack a hell of a punch.

I'm onboard about the false freedom of increased clean sheet frequency, but not sure all those women were so "compliant."

Not much point in getting a new washer if you're still using "Old Fashioned Water!"
