Every Mother's Son (and Daughter)

Further to this blog post and my Friday treeware column (which I did not blog) ...

I saw an incredible ad today in The Globe and Mail, which I cannot find online anywhere. Too bad. It's a Harper-mom-180 montage of photos of G8 leaders as children with their mothers. At the bottom, the text says

Your mother taught you how to write your name, now she'd expect you to sign it.

Every single minute a mother dies in pregnancy or childbirth. 80% of those deaths are preventable. At this week's G8 Summit in Italy, you are the 8 people who can prevent them -- it's as simple as that. Reduce maternal mortality and make every mother proud of you.

Mothers everywhere are watching and hoping.

Then there's a pointer to the Every Mothers Matters page at the Make Poverty History site.

Please click over there and you'll find a an easy way to email Prime Minister Stephen Harper and demand that he keeps Canada's promise on reducing maternal mortality.

One way to reduce maternal mortality is to ensure women have reproductive choices so that they can have babies when their bodies are mature enough to handle pregnancy, or to prevent too many pregnancies in succession. Women should also have access to pregnancy monitoring technology and safe and legal abortion when their lives are in danger.

If women have these choices, they will have time to get an education and/or to start businesses or farms or find jobs in order to raise stronger and healthier children.

Fewer children.

That's good for them.

That's good for us.

"Women should also have access to pregnancy monitoring technology and safe and legal abortion when their lives are in danger."

This is the only part that I can agree to, because every other problem you mentioned can be solved by just not having as much sex. It's a much better alternative to murder in my opinion.

Hey that's great Antonia. Thanks for the link.

Yeah Dafe because every woman who gets pregnant in less developed countries is a slut, right?

Dafe, what a brilliant notion!

Get working on it right now.

Start a campaign for men:
1) put a cork in it,
2) go the self-service route, and
3) stop forcing women to have sex with them.

That will lower the rate of maternal mortality.

As if you cared - I'd guess that you basically hate women.

I think men should stop having so much sex.

It takes two people to have sex so except in the case of rape it is also the woman's decision and responsibility. Of course I care about maternal mortality, but abortion isn't a good way to stop it, unless of course the woman's life is in danger. in the case of rape, isn't it a better decision to stop the rape itself not just its effects?

Antonia: stop putting words in my mouth. Where did I say anything like that? Pregnancy deaths can happen to anyone not just those who have sex frequently. Therefore as I have always said an abortion is legal and justified if the woman is going to die.

DeBeauxOs and hysperia: If women didn't want to have sex with men then all sex would be rape. Do you claim that this is true? How can you blame only the man in a consensual decision?

Broadsides by Antonia Zerbisias

  • Antonia Zerbisias has been a Star columnist since 1989 but has been telling people what she thinks ever since she could open her mouth. Her career ambition as an opinionator dates back to Grade 9 when a cartoon commentary on a teacher resulted in her suspension from high school. The principal sent her home with a note calling her "rude, obstreperous and bold." Her parents were neither amused, nor surprised. Once she was punished for being that way. Now she makes it pay. And, because she can take it as well as dish it out, she wants to hear what you have to say. Fire away!
