''Hillary Freaks Out!''

Sexism?

Sez who?

Oh. I do.

Click here for a gallery of cartoons on US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's tour of Africa.

Here's a sample, from The Star's very own Theo Moudakis.

Mou

Because, you know, there was nothing else in the news, or worth commenting on.

It would have been funnier if the caption had riffed off mentioning healthcare. Afterall, it was her idea.

A social psychologist once told me that she thought humor to be the most complex and nuanced of human behaviors---and the most difficult behavior to know how to resolve with society's legal and cultural codes.

For one thing, it is the violation of some social or cultural taboo that makes humor what it is. For another thing, humor is a social device that enables people to laugh at what they fear.

So, even sexist humor can have the effect of disarming men's latent fears and prejudices about having Hillary in high political position. And I have no doubt that many males harbor a fear of powerful women.

Moreover, the jokes regarding Hillary are clearly and unfortunately sexist, but also, I have to admit ARE funny. In spite of the sexism, does this politically incorrect and sexist humor serve a constructive role in society? Perhaps.

The thing is, I wouldn't denounce politically incorrect humor too zealously.

Hilary freaking out was hilarious. I don't like her or Bill. but I don't hate her either.

I think you read too much into this stuff. She's a big public figure and she lost her cool. If it had been a male politician, they would have had a field day as well.

Broadsides by Antonia Zerbisias

  • Antonia Zerbisias has been a Star columnist since 1989 but has been telling people what she thinks ever since she could open her mouth. Her career ambition as an opinionator dates back to Grade 9 when a cartoon commentary on a teacher resulted in her suspension from high school. The principal sent her home with a note calling her "rude, obstreperous and bold." Her parents were neither amused, nor surprised. Once she was punished for being that way. Now she makes it pay. And, because she can take it as well as dish it out, she wants to hear what you have to say. Fire away!
