Someday my prince will come 2.0

Funny that none of them have names, not unlike Sex and the City's Mr. Big.

Ah yes. The perfect guy. Rich, famous, good-looking.

Strictly in fairy tales, of course.

It's like that frozen pizza commercial...

Well your prince will never come Zerbisias we have evolved enough to know you only want one who will change your oil, fix the leaks, cut the lawn, etc. Those are your dream guys. All others are irrelevant and part of the evil patriarchy that has kept you wimmin down.

Uuuummm.... the prince from Sleeping Beauty is named Philip and the one from The Little Mermaid is named Eric.

Sad, but not entirely surprising that I know this.

My guess would be that the name of every prince is the same. Same as the name of a world class Canadian rock band, that is. I would venture to guess that anyone who cannot guess who the band is will have to click on the link below. Also listen for the world's most famous DJ Wolfman Jack's voice in the background of the song that will be played back by the mystery Canadian rock band at the other end of the link. Wolfman Jack just has a few words of wisdom for aspiring princes, which probably would have been very helpful for me to actually listen to during one of the first few hundred times I heard the song, back when it first came out. I think the song also qualifies under the topic of princes since it mentions a "Duke."

Ummm, I thought Sex and the City was the empowering feminist show that told women they could have anonymous sex just like men. Hence the generic Mr. Big. Because size matters.

Are you saying that SATC was really a tarted up Disney?

And would you feel any better if the Disney heroines were just called Princess or Mermaid or Harem Babe, to match the men?

I think the women in Some Day My Prince Will Come 1 and the men in Some Day My Prince Will Come 2 deserve each other.
Don't know about what other wimmen think but I have always found the pretty boys egotistical, the rich ones controlling, the famous ones want supermodels - as for charming that is indeed a requirement but is usually based on humour, intelligence, open-mindedness and a kind spirit.
Not saying I'm crazy for a guy who takes a bath once a year - but really looks have never been near the top of my list nor has money - and as for fame - geeze they all end up on Dr. Drew in rehab, do they not, eventually?

That is an astute observation, Antonia - they don't have names because all they have is their job, and that's all they need to have. To date, men have not had an organized movement akin to what women had, intending to release them from their tradional role as breadwinner. What's worse, a faction of male advocacy called The Promise Keepers(aka the "mythopoetic men's movement") emerged, wholeheartedly embracing the role of "Man as wallet" -- staunch conservatism posing as progressive reform. This group ends up chumming the water when engaging women's advocates, who rightly brand them as kooks. Ironic though, that women's advocacy ends up being a silent investor in the movement, since it also defines the wallet as power, rather than the freedom to choose one's path, and because so many women's advocates tend to feel threatened by the notion that men may share in their disenfranchisement, for different reasons. With its eye on the treasure chest -despite aspirations toward "equality" - it's incapable of helping men escape from their prescribed expectations to perform and succeed, and from the consequences of failure. Until a wider view is tolerated or embraced on issues of gender politics, these kinds of representations will remain.

wasn't Philip young Edward's friend in Braveheart?

in any case, the Prince in the Little Mermaid didn't have a name

Broadsides by Antonia Zerbisias

  • Antonia Zerbisias has been a Star columnist since 1989 but has been telling people what she thinks ever since she could open her mouth. Her career ambition as an opinionator dates back to Grade 9 when a cartoon commentary on a teacher resulted in her suspension from high school. The principal sent her home with a note calling her "rude, obstreperous and bold." Her parents were neither amused, nor surprised. Once she was punished for being that way. Now she makes it pay. And, because she can take it as well as dish it out, she wants to hear what you have to say. Fire away!
