I think this video proves that if there were a market to legally entertain pedophiles in public, someone would show up with a ukulele and start plucking away.

I got some post video headache relief by watching the following real ukulele talent, mixed with some real (British) humour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfK-UzQ48JE

I have another story of good ol catholic respect for women.Shocked by reaction in listowel,is the name of the facebook group set up to show support of a rape victim The rape occured in rural Ireland and the rapist was tried ,found guilty and sentanced. However a priest decided to take a stand for the rapist and provided a character reference for him ,that was just the start really!.50 people shook the rapists hand in court to offer solidarity and now the victim is being refused service in her home town and threatened with (more)physical harm for having the bravery to press charges.http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/1217/listowel.html .Its a horrible story to read, never mind live through but it shows that even in so-called developed nations women will never be given the quality of life as any man.The justice system worked but the small minded backwardness of rural life rears its ugly head once again

Your comments about the rape in Ireland do not seem unfair, Tara, except for what looks like a generalization in your first sentence of Catholics as being more notoriously disrespectful of women than people of other religions, or of no religion, presumably. Is that your perception? According to the report you summarized, the bishop of the diocese disassociated himself and the diocese with the local priest and parishioners, who made the rapist king for a day. Apparently, the bishop also expressed his sympathy for the victim, apologized to her on behalf of the diocese, paid tribute to her courage, and expressed his hope that her story would not discourage other victims of rape from seeking justice. Still, I would have to agree that the local Catholics involved and priest of the parish in Listowel, Co Kerry are almost as much of an embarrassment to all Catholics as the convicted rapist.

Jim, if the bishop did not immediately remove this "priest" from the parish then he really did nothing. The man was convicted for a crime that is repugnant to both the law and church and Ryan was making a public show of the defendant being a good boy.

RC's may not be, as a whole, more disrepectful of women but they have a public, codified restriction to women's participation in their religion and they are the largest Christian denomination around the world.

Of course, I disagree that the bishop "did nothing," mozo, but it is easy to see why you call defending the Catholic Church "white noise" in another comment. I cannot really defend Catholic white noise, but only for the same reason that I do not argue with Stygian about guns. Reality may not be on my side at the moment, but now that others have indirectly raised the question of which religion is public enemy number one of women in Canada, I will cast my vote for in favour of extreme Evangelical Protestants. They are the most visible and noisy group of people seen marching the streets in protest against abortion and same-sex marriage, and the group most likely to show up at election time just to cast ballots based on those two issues... forsaking the right to a decent life for all the unborn children they pose as saviours of.

Broadsides by Antonia Zerbisias

  • Antonia Zerbisias has been a Star columnist since 1989 but has been telling people what she thinks ever since she could open her mouth. Her career ambition as an opinionator dates back to Grade 9 when a cartoon commentary on a teacher resulted in her suspension from high school. The principal sent her home with a note calling her "rude, obstreperous and bold." Her parents were neither amused, nor surprised. Once she was punished for being that way. Now she makes it pay. And, because she can take it as well as dish it out, she wants to hear what you have to say. Fire away!
