All the single ladies
Via Dammit Janet:
Crazy right wing lady conbot Phyllis Schlafly, self-styled as America's ''leader of the pro-family movement
since 1972,'' exhausted from her travails against gays and lesbians, uppity women, healthcare advocates, liberals, anti-gun activists, etc. etc. etc., has now set her sights on that scourge of western society ... the single welfare mother!
Unmarried women, 70 percent of unmarried women, voted for Obama, and this is because when you kick your husband out, you've got to have big brother government to be your provider."
On Thursday, in an interview with Talking Points Memo, Schlafly repeated her link of single women, Obama and welfare, and added.
"Yes, I said that. It's true too. All welfare goes to unmarried moms.''
No, there are no single welfare dads. No welfare disabled. No welfare elderly. No welfare veterans. No welfare gun victims. No welfare anything except Single! Welfare! Mothers! and their bastard babies (but Heaven forbid that they have abortions, eh Phyllis?)
And you thought the Harris regime was over?

If people on welfare and those who are marginalized in our society voted more often, perhaps we wouldn't have so much poverty. I am not criticizing them for not being able to get to polling stations, I understand why so many have difficulty doing that. I am simply saying that their voice is missing from the discussion and getting them to the polls would go a long way to changing things. Gosh, I would like to see people like Phyllis Schlafly have to learn to survive on what the average single mother gets from social services.

I think it was J Paul Getty who said that if you equalised all levels of income etc, you'd have millionaires and beggars within half an hour. I'd give it a bit longer, but ....
You'd have to drop Phyliis Schlafly's IQ by half and steal all her memories to render her at the same level as an "average single mother on welfare".
Phyllis Schlafly may be a bit past it now, but I seem to remember Kate Millett falling to the material level of an "average single mother on welfare". If Phyllis Schlafly actually did so fall I'd send her a hundred, and I m sure other popular woemn's blogs would urge their readers to do the same.......
I MISS Mike Harris ....

I like it that the American conservatives have traipsed all their old warhorses out of the barn for the inevitable discussion on the value of government regulation and oversight when the Gulf gusher disaster is about to be pemanently sealed.
Just when it might start to fizz in the brains of middle america that government regulation is a very necessary presence in their lives, and that meaningful oversight of business is a must in the 21st century, the conservatives again attempt to re-shape contemporary debate to focus on gendered and racist stereotypes to fight against "big brother" government. And in case all those voters left behind don't know the reference and think it has something to do with reality tv or a nice benevolent and protective executive leader, they'll tell you what it really means! and how you should feel about it!
Well, to borrow Pres. Obama's approach to rooting out racism, I think we should all have discussions at tables across the country. Look into our hearts, find our own biases and embrace our inner-reactionary. Re-load our feminism over o.j. and homebaked, 100-mile breads, biscuits or cookies with discussions of "my favourite government intervention story" and "ya, that woman really tried to put me in my place" anecdotes. Along with, "so she really burned her bra back then, huh?" tales. I'm going to dig out the 1970'a US ballot initiative paraphernalia I saved as a kid, put it in the window again!

I honestly can't imagine how anyone could live off the current welfare rates without engaging on some sort of welfare fraud like doing some under the table work or pan handling or whatever else they need to do to survive. Our welfare rates see, deigned to keep people on welfare and in misery since it just isn't enough money to do things like find a good job since they can't afford transit let alone new shoes or clothes for an interview if needed. Our current welfare rates may be enough to keep people from dying in the streets but not by much, the shelter allowance portion is absolutely ridiculous, it should be enough so a person on welfare could afford a small apartment instead of a rooming house. I expected McGuinty to reverse the Harris cuts yet that hasn't happened, I used to be a McGuinty supporter in the early days because I figured he just needed some time to get the needed changes done, well he's had more than enough time yet has done nothing to help those most in need in our province. From now on I'll only be supporting the NDP provincially, I think they're much more trust worthy when dealing with those in greatest need in our society.
