Powershift's Fill the Hill, and National Day of Action

Thousands of people across Canada participate in a Global Day of Action to advocate for Canada to take a leadership stand and put forht strong emissions targets to combat global climate change.

I was at 'Fill the Hill', the action planned for Ottawa where over 1000 people were gathered outside Parliament Hill withstanding the cold and the rain to chant, to dance, and to hear from several of the country's top climate activists.

Canada has the largest number of events worldwide, behind the United States.

The event was just one of 5,200 events globally in 181 countries organized by 350.org, a group dedicated to reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air to 350 parts per mission. NASA scientist James Hansen identified the number as the safest limit for carbon dioxide levels in the air. The world is currently over that number, at 383 parts per million.

While on Parliament Hill with a thousand other people calling for strong climate action, I couldn't help but wonder whether Jim Prentice or Stephen Harper might be peaking out behind a curtain to catch a glimpse of the extraordinary event and what they must be thinking...
