time for cyclists to start taking a full lane of traffic

and another thing.. endangering citizens so other citizens can drive faster.. should be a violation of rights.. love to see barbara hall look at this from the position of safety of the citizen.

For someone who is supposed to be saving the city so much money, Ford and his cronies sure are costing the city a lot in unnecessary expenditures....

What's with you people??? The City is doing what's best for both cyclists and motorists. We're not building a city by tearing it down we're streamlining it once again. Don't forget that these so-called bike lanes tore-away perfectly good street lanes to accomodate to lanes for bikes causing traffic flow to build up and slow down. Case in point is the ridiculous Eastern Avenue. Why do cyclists need to bottle neck the thousands of cars that drive in and out of the City each day when you have a perfectly good 100% bike lane on Lakeshore? You can't expect to have a bike lane every inch of the way to and from home.

Almost a half a million dollars from a major who claims the city is broke? We are now the laughing stock of other great cities around the world who are INSTALLING bike lanes right, left and centre. This council will be known for wasting precious dollars to fulfil their right-wing "dreams" of getting rid of those pesky bikes in favour of polluting cars.. Shame on you all.

Couldn't been happier with this decision. Sherbourne should have always been where the seperated bike lane was put in the first place.

Protests work both ways cyclists. You block cars and good luck navigating around parked cars on non-separated bike lanes. The stupid bike lanes on Jarvis will be gone soon and you will get your separated lanes on roads that aren't as busy. Pretty fair trade off.

All cyclists should protest and take the lane whenever they ride on a street without bike lanes. If drivers honk and complain, tell them to direct their complaints to city hall.

Glad to hear the road are return back to drivers .. Cyclists should be cycling elsewhere..

The plan to have physically separated bike lanes is the way to go..

If we are trading a questionable lane like Jarvis and a lightly used Scarborough facility for a fledgling separate system then as cyclists we win.

That's the gospel, suck it up, you got Jarvis through trickery, you can (& will) still win in the end.

Oh well, I guess now there will be a bigger traffic jam on Jarvis because bikers are going to take over the whole right lane - too bad cars, you are stuck driving behind bikers now! Look at the bright side bikers - you get a wider lane all to yourself.

Instead of getting rid of the bike lanes, wouldn't it make sense to have the commuters (suburbanites) coming into the city to pay a toll? Car owners would go beserk about their god-given right to go wherever the hell they want but it's common in world-class cities and Toronto has always aspired to be world class in any way possible so.....

Bicycle riders are worst trafic violaters in the city. They need to obey the rules.

JARVIS IS NOTHING WORTH CRYING FOR

It’s a shame that a painted line on an arterial is the “best” cycling facility in the City. Toronto needs proper bike facilities, safe for 8 year olds and 80 year olds.
We need to lower speed on ALL neighbourhood streets below 30 Km/h. On arterials we need a BIKEWAY NETWORK physically separated from pedestrians and cars connecting places of origin with destinations. Walking and Cycling CAN AND SHOULD BE SAFE. Period.

who needs bike lanes? i bike in to work every morning and every morning the bike lane is full of parked cars or delivery vans and cars turning right... what is the point of a bike lane if it is constantly obstructed? I actually feel safer when there are no bike lanes because people rarely block a full lane of traffic and I can ride in a predictable manner on the road where I am more likely to be noticed by motorists.

How come we cant compromise? As a biker I stay away from Jarvis. Too many cars and opportunities to get hurt. Let the cars have Jarvis and us bikers can use Sherbourne or other parallel north south roads. They are safer really. I just dont understand why Jarvis? What TO really needs is to put the protests behind getting a proper network in place that helps both cars and bikers. And that is very achieveable. We just need open minds, who are willing to make compromises and look for the greater good of the city, and not try to push their own agendas at the expense of others. Its pretty sad to see the comments on here. Truly.

I have used both car and bicycle on Jarvis, and I have to say that both experiences were improved after the removal of the centre reversable lane and the implimentation of bike lanes. Before there was little dicipline on the part of drivers and traffic would be held up as people switched back and forth. That stopped with the reduction to two lanes each way. This reversal has nothing to do with traffic planning and everything to do with right-wing "car is king" ideology.

@Confused-Biker. I want to use Jarvis because I usually want to travel West on College or Well. Why should I go blocks east out of my way?

Why should the design of my neighbourhood be dictated by people who don't live here?

In Frankfurt, Germany, I noticed that the most heavily used bike lanes were on secondary streets and that the main streets like Jarvis were kept for cars and traffic. Makes more sense to me to cycle in a safer environment. Plus these secondary streets tend to have more trees which makes the ride a little nicer and less hot in summer.

the the bikers start hogging lanes...than the police should come in and give them a ticket....Which me reminds me....walking today on a sidewalk to idiot bikers driving on sidewalk who nearly ran into me...BIKERS OUT OF CONTROL IN THIS CITY.

Given that the war on the cyclist started upon the election of Ford, it won't be too long before some more cyclists get run over by car and truck drivers who believe it is their right to run me over. I have had more cars cut me off in the past month than in the previous six months. I am also not one of the cyclists who flagrantly dis-obey the rules of the road. I do want to make it home with all my fingers and toes after each ride so I don't take the risks. But then drivers who flagrantly disobey the rules (like running red lights) make it dangerous even for other drivers and can really ruin someones life.

Since when we put on our cyclist hats, we are allowed by the traffic act to use a whole lane if necessary, the real need is to educate the public on the law. i don't want a separate lane. i want the police to enforce the law as it exists. i want ford to make a statement that cyclists have a right to a lane. that's all. this would be free and give cyclists road access all over the city. couldn't ask for more.
