I drive the Bayview Extension (between Queen & Moore) every day, twice a day. It never fails to amaze me when I see a) slow moving cyclists or b) cyclists with no helmet on riding on a stretch of road with a speed limit of 70km. Drivers hit 80-90km easily on that road. There are no bike lanes or even a shoulder to ride on. Reckless driving aside (a whole other article and debate can be started on that topic for this city), why do these cyclists put themselves in danger? I'm all for people riding bikes but they need to be safe. Major arteries in the city were made for cars to keep them off the little neighborhood streets and ease congestion. They were not made for bikes. If the city were to provide cyclists with safe and car free alternatives I think it would be better for everyone. Both drivers and riders should be able to co-exist but both the management and citizens need to use some common sense. Just today I saw a cyclist run a red light and almost get hit by a driver making a legal left turn. The driver didn't see the cyclist due to the stopped cars blocking his view. Then, I saw a cyclist riding in the middle of a lane on Bayview going north from Queen, and make an illegal left turn into southbound traffic on the turn point from River to head south on Bayview. These cyclists are the reason why cars and bikes don't mix. A car swerving to miss a bike, or stopping short to accommodate an illegal move make far more damage than a bike and can cost lives. If cyclists want bike lanes on major arteries in the city, then they need to obey the rules of the road. Unfortunately, a sense of entitlement seems to keep them from doing so and therefore they should ride on smaller streets or off road on dedicated paths. I didn't vote for Rob Ford, but I do agree with his statement made some time ago - streets are for cars.

Boo Hoo Cyclists....

If Miller hadn't forced through the supid change in the first place, we wouldn't be in this cost incurring mess.

Miller Lubbers are gopher dorks.

Reading comments of people talking about "perfectly good car lanes" make me angry.. The third lanes only makes for more people changing lane when they get closer to Bloor. No matter how many lines Jarvis have, there can only be that many cars a minute up there and the third line won't make it any faster. I've heard about a survey that said there was a 5 minutes difference since the bike lanes going north. Now... that 5 minutes may save someones life or prevent someone from having a serious injury; that's pretty darn good!

It's about time we start charging people from the suburbs driving on our roads. You want to be lazy and not take public transit, fine, convenience has a price, pay for using our roads and making locals life hell. That would solve a lot of traffic related problems in the city. We need better transit and we need bike lanes, let the stubborn drivers pay for that. A quarter of them would spend less time using public transit anyway.

9 out of 10 cars in the rush hour traffic has a single occupant, how about focusing on them rather than the folks who have chosen to use a bike instead of a car

Nonsense.....
