Meet one lucky little squirrel. While having my morning coffee on my deck on Saturday, I noticed something unusual moving about in the pool of my neighbours, Glad and Shirley Lang. At first glance it appeared to be some sort of pool cleaning device skimming the surface. On second glance I soon realized that this was a distressed young squirrel swimming in circles, desperately trying to get out of the pool. Quickly realizing that my neighbours weren't home, I barged into their backyard with a long stick — hoping that the squirrel would grasp on it to climb out. By the time I got to it, the poor thing was floating on its back trying to conserve energy. Grabbing it by the scruff of the neck, I pulled it onto the deck. The squirrel was clearly in trouble and I wasn't sure it was going to make it. After wrapping it up in a towel, I raced off to my vet's office with it cradled in my arms — encouraging this little creature to hang in there and that there would be a great big peanut reward at the end of the day.
A few hours later, the kind folks at the Ajax Animal Hospital said that this little squirrel pup, who almost drowned, was full of beans and ready to go home!
Here's Bobbie, (what she was nicknamed) just before I released her back into our neighbourhood — of course with a firm scolding to stay out of swimming pools......... and my tulips!

Europe's last wild horses are driven into an arena to pick out young stallions in Duelmen, Germany, Saturday, May 26, 2012. It is believed that this is the last herd of wild horses on the European continent in this 350 hectare reservation in western Germany, where more than 300 of the indigenous horses stay free and wild without any care under the protection of the Duke of Croy. Only once a year the new born stallions are caught and sold, all mares stay with the herd and guarantee the survive of the endangered species.
