I've tried that method. What the kid doesn't know about yet is the spine of the cat, which permits the most amazing turns. And he has such an inviting nose ...

Pulling a cat's tail is never a good plan, as I learned the hard way in youth. (Corky kept me company in my cradle, and there have been cats ever since.) Gus has explained about the spine. He hasn't yet explained why he doesn't help with laundry, dishes or even refreshing the litter box. Not much of a guard cat, either. I came back from the 7-Eleven one day to find a trio of antelopes emptying the fridge, and ever-helpful Gus was snoozing on the phone rather than picking it up to call 911.
