Confronting my fear of bees, litres of mead and Hans Martin

Thanks to Hans Martin for one of the most interesting days I have enjoyed in recent memory and for helping me confront my fear of bees.

As the year passes, I am becoming more interested in what it takes to produce or preserve food and I feel I wouldn't be true to my French and German blood if I didn't include some kind of alcohol to that mix. (Cheese and sausage will hopefully be next)

Martin is a member of the Toronto District Beekeepers Association and kindly agreed to teach me how to make mead, a honey based alcohol, at his King City home.

The full story and video is here.

Next drink on the list is hopefully ginger beer.

Emily vs. the City

  • Emily Mathieu has big plans – big, complicated, somewhat foolhardy plans - to break away from her desk and become more self-reliant. How to fend off a dog attack, butcher your own meat and splint a broken wrist are just the beginning.
