Four former interns win photography awards

Four former Toronto Star interns were honoured Saturday night by the News Photographer Association of Canada.

Pawel Dwulit's video, Lianne's Story, was judged the best in the team multimedia category.

Dwulit was a member of the Star's one-year intern program last year.

The team multimedia award goes to a package, shot and edited and/or produced by a team. It must include at least two of the following elements: still photography, audio, video.

Former photo intern Steve Russell walked away with the top prize in the national picture of the year category with a photo of a late night bar brawl in Toronto's entertainment district (below).

Carlos Osorio, another former photo department intern, placed third in the same category with a picture of parents grieving over their son in a triple drowning (below).

Second place in the team multimedia category went to former photo intern Lucas Oleniuk, who with Star staffer Randy Risling, entered William and the Windmill.

NPAC was formed three years ago with the merger of the Western and Eastern Canadian News Photographer Associations. The non-profit organization represents news, documentary and media photographers and editors across Canada.

The National Pictures of the Year are also in their third year. They are similar to the National Newspaper Awards, but larger, with 11 categories, including:
Spot News, General News, Feature, Social Issues, Sports Action, Sports Feature, Portrait/Personality, Pictorial, Picture Story, Single Multimedia and Team Multimedia. All photographs must have been made within 2009. Non-published work is eligible for entry.
