Following on Dave Perkins' column yesterday outlining a new group -- it's an old group, actually -- seeking an NFL franchise for Toronto, the Globe followed up today with some more on this pipe dream latest talk.
"It's the elephant in the room," Richard Peddie described the league, which presumably means the Raptors are the mouse and the Leafs the hungry cat and maybe I am the Walrus (come to think of it, the NFL is the elephant in my living room every Sunday. And Rome is the elephant on Sunday nights, etc.).
And speaking of the Raptors, Sam Mitchell is vowing to "do the right thing," Doug Smith reports. "I struggled with certain guys and I have to learn," says Mitchell. Five points and an autographed Damon Stoudamire poster if you can guess who he's talking about (just kidding about the prizes. I'm keeping my Damon poster, thanks).
Punters Corner: In keeping with our tradition now going into its second week, here's five Pro-Line plays for you this weekend (entertainment purposes only, not for the purposes of wagering, and besides I was 1-4 last week so why would you ever want to?, etc.):
WSST V Win 2.50 -- I always have had a soft spot for dear old WSST U. And they're playing ORST, who are NG.
Chelsea at Liverpool Draw 2.80 -- Another one of those riveting 0-0 scorelines here.
Cincinnati H win+ 1.50 -- Chad Johnson to host new reality series, So You Think You Can Wide Receiver?
Baltimore H win+ 1.80 -- Incoming Jets QB Vinny Testaverde to hold up sideline sign: "Please, Ray, don't sack me."
Atlanta H win+ 2.20 -- Vikings coach Mike Tice to hold up sideline sign: "Please owner, don't fire me."
Weekend we're watching: Yankees at Red Sox (Friday, 7 p.m., WSBK); Saturday, 1 pm, FOX; Sunday, 2 pm, Sportsnet East). Unfortunately, two of the three in digital. But like the NFL in Toronto, this one is the elephant in the living room -- Richard Peddie's description, not mine. Heck, it's a freakin' circus in my living room.
Not watching: Curling, Battle of the Sexes (Sunday, 8 p.m., Sportsnet). Have to give up something on such a busy weekend, and it was a difficult decision but this, in prime time yet, is it.
And in honour of the White Sox division title, a look at their uniform history.
Oh, and just in time for the weekend: baseball playoff tiebreaker scenarios. Just add water, two aspirins and read.
