A quick baseball note, before turning the blog over to NBA and the Raptors: Hey, a couple of Gold Gloves for the Blue Jays. Congrats to Vernon Wells and Orlando Hudson.
(UPDATE: If you've been reading here this week, you knew this was coming: Pat Gillick is the Phillies' new GM).
And following on yesterday's Theo Epstein news, Bill Simmons had a pretty good column out of it that's worth a read. This is a story about far more than just baseball, touching on media criticism, sports reporting, corporate ownership, loyalties and the validity of the "boy wonder" persona that Epstein had in Boston. Simmons touches 'em all:
"The same guys who brought Boston a World Series also formed an Orwellian media conglomerate in which they control all the information in the city's most important newspaper, as well as the TV and radio stations that carry the games.
(snip)
"It was telling that, on the same day that Theo announced his resignation, Monday's Globe contained a story that he had signed for three years."
Oh, and don't forget -- actually you can't, 'cause I'm going to keep reminding you -- Vote here for Tom Cheek, a deserving Hall of Famer.
