In the long history of the NBA, in order to maximize a franchise's chances of winning the championship, one simple constant jumps out at you ... to win the title your team must have at least one (or more) "Top 3 Draft Picks" among it's core group of rotation players.

If an organization truly has this as its ultimate goal, it better recognize this immutable fact of life in the NBA ... there's a huge difference in ability between these two groups of players - i.e. (i) Top 3 Draft Picks, and (ii) everybody else.

Go back over the last 30 years or so, and you will see the hand-writing on the wall for yourself. Teams who do their damnedest to acquire "Top 3 Draft Picks" on their roster are the only ones with a legitimate shot at going all the way (in any given year).

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: (i) Who among you thought that Chauncey Billups (a "Top 3 Draft Pick" in a down year) would eventually turn into Mr. Big Shot? (ii) What you do in "down years" can make all the difference in the fortunes of your franchise long term. (iii) Do the Raptors have even one "Top 3 Draft Pick" on their current roster? ('til they do, nuff said)

As one of the headlines in the Star (April 30) summed up: An over-hyped crap shoot, yes, but a crucial one.

It still may not mean a thing, but I'm glad the Leafs beefed up their scouting staff. It might make them watchable one day.
