Stand-up comedian Tyler Boeh has a suggestion for panhandlers. Instead of standing on the exit ramps of freeways with signs reading "Everything Helps", "Will Work for Food", or (my personal favourite which I actually saw in Toronto recently) "I take VISA", Boeh suggests "$5.00 and I'll be your Commuter Buddy!"
You have to stop for the "One car per green" light on many freeways during rush hours anyway. So the panhandler jumps in, you get to use the HOV lane, he makes a few bucks - pure win-win!
You can drop him off anywhere; he just needs to find another ride back.
And it doesn't really matter where you leave him - he's probably homeless; so in a sense he's always 'home'.
His friends ask, "What do you do for a living?"
"Anywhere. I actually commute for a living. "
So lay down those squeegies kids, maybe grab a shower at the local Y, and get creative.
