When the mines which were the geological and economic backbone of the Island closed, he began a career-driven counter-clockwise arc that took him to St. John's, Vancouver, San Francisco, and Scottsdale Arizona.
A co-worker there, noting that Alvin was originally from Newfoundland, asked him what he knew about Targa.
"Nothing"! he replied, having left The Rock long before Targa began.
Intrigued, Alvin looked it up on-line and thought - hey, that looks like fun!
He was particularly taken with the Mazda Miata powered by a small-block Chevy, built by "Flyin' Miata" and entered here a couple of years ago by Keith Tanner.
Alvin contacted Keith, Keith told him Flying Miata could help him out, and Alvin is running the Miata V8 you see here in this year's Fast Tour division, with co-driver Andrew Steckiel.
The Targa Driver's School last Friday, which Alvin attended, was held on Bell Island.
