Clinch Week: Toronto Maple Leafs will clinch playoff birth this week
It’s clinch week, Maple Leafs fans, so start cheering against the Winnipeg Jets and make your new favourite number six.
As the playoffs near, the Jets are the only team capable of knocking the Buds out of the post-season.
The Jets likely won’t be claiming their division over the Washington Capitals. That leaves the Caps in third place, and the Jets in ninth.
With just six games left on their schedule, the Jets can only manage a total of 56 points this season.
This means the Leafs need only finish with 57 points to at least claim eighth place in the Eastern Conference and their first playoff birth since 2004.
So, either the Leafs go on a tear this week, quickly claiming six points for a total of 57, or they hope the Jets lose.
A single Jets’ loss, combined with two Leafs’ wins — there’s that magic number six, again — will also clinch a playoff birth for the Buds.
The Jets play Tampa Bay on Tuesday, Carolina on Thursday and the New York Islanders on Saturday.
The Leafs play New Jersey on Monday, a week after they beat them.
The Buds then play the Caps on Tuesday, the Islanders on Thursday and the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.
Go Leafs Go. Go Lighting Go, too. Cheers.
