Go Leafs Go contest winners
When Todd Horn heard he could win Maple Leafs tickets and have his winning photo published in the Star, a flood of memories returned.
Nearly eight years ago, Horn took his daughter Jocelyn to the first Leafs home game following the 2005 lockout.
Jocelyn was having her face painted when a photographer from the Star approached them and snapped her picture.
“He said it may be in the paper,” Horn said Sunday. “We woke up the next day and it was on the front page.”
Horn immediately rushed to the closest grocery store and bought 10 copies of the paper, all of which he still has, one of them framed in his office.
Since then, he and his daughter have become diehard Leaf fans despite the team’s long absence from the playoffs.
“She’s never even seen them in the playoffs,” Horn said. “We’re super excited for Monday’s game. We’re going to win!”
Jocelyn, 10, gets emotional anytime someone mentions the Montreal Canadiens, or currently the Boston Bruins, around her. She said she hates hearing about the Habs and Bruins because of their rivalry with the Leafs.
“My friends and teachers at school cheer for them,” she said. “No, no, no, no, I’m a Leafs fan!”
Jocelyn said she likes Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf.
“I like Phaneuf the most because he’s Canadian,” she said, adding she can’t remember the last game she saw live.
When her dad told her she was going to attend Monday’s Game 3, Jocelyn was shocked at first.
“Then I was super excited and I was screaming my head off,” she said, adding she’ll be screaming even louder Monday night.
The Star received nearly 1,000 photo entries for the Go Leafs Go contest, and the 10 most creative were selected as winners, including Steven Vandervelde’s juxtaposed shots of his daughter wearing a Leafs jersey and a Bruins jersey while seated on a coach.
Vandervelde snapped one of his daughter in a Leafs jersey, looking happy, and another of her crying in a Bruins jersey for the fun picture.
“I was in the shower when I got the phone call I’d won,” said Vandervelde, who was keeping his phone next to him.
He had placed his cordless next to the shower, and reached out to answer it.
“I was naked and I was excited,” he said, laughing. “You gotta do it!”
So do the Leafs. Go Leafs Go. Cheers. All WINNING pics are inside the post...
