Recap: GAME 2 Leafs v.s. Bruins
Wow. What a game.
The Leafs dominated the Bruins on Saturday. That’s it. End of story!
There are just too many ways to explain it, too many things that went right, that were turned around from our first disappointing game.
But here they are…
A full 60 minutes, with full intensity by the Leafs from puck drop to final buzzer. (Fraser last minute fight!)
Kessel, well, c’mon! his performance – in Boston, no less –silenced all of his critics.
Grabo, Lupul, JVR? They all showed up. They all pitched in.
Our boys got more than 30 shots on net, finally. Lupul had eight of those!
(Side note, we still allowed 40+ shots, thanks, Reimer, for being OptimusReim!)
With every hit, every dumped-in puck we beat the Bruins defence to, every goal, fans watching the game in Toronto at Maple Leafs Square began to really, really BeLeaf.
Boston went up 1-0, but the Leafs stormed back, scoring three in a row; two from Lupul, then one from Kessel.
“Go Kessel Go, Go Kessel Go,” fans were chanting after he put the Leafs up 3-1. That goal sealed the victory.
Friends watching the game together turned to one another: “This team looks different,” they were saying. “They’re playing so much better.”
And the Leafs kept up the better play, all the way until the end of the game.
They played disciplined – Boston only had one power play.
They played tough – we outhit Boston 44-35, including some memorable hits on their tougher players, like Grabo knocking Lucic.
They played smart – dump and chase, chip the puck out when pressure is on without icing it, block nearly 20 shots.
No one expected the Leafs to steal a game in Boston.
No one thought we’d match up to a more experienced, veteran Bruins team.
No one thought we could break the Boston curse – that they’ve had our number, that Kessel just gets stifled against them and that we seem to forget we’re playing hockey when up against them.
Now all know, all must acknowledge: we’re here to play, here to fight, and no one – not even Boston – is going to knock us down and roll over us.
Keep your head up, Bruins. You’re coming to Toronto on Monday…we’ll win our two home games unlike you.
Back to Boston up 3-1, sounds good to me. Check out some more great game pics and highlights of all the Leafs goals inside the post...Oh, and the last minute fight. Here is Kessel's goal! Thank you, Kessel.
