Recap: GAME 4 Leafs v.s. Bruins
The way we lost gives me hope we won’t lose the series Friday.
That was a tough one, Leafs Nation. We deserved to win.
The Toronto Maple Leafs played well Wednesday in a must-win game, but came up short in overtime, losing 4-3 against the Boston Bruins.
Now down 3-1 in the series, I had said it’ll likely be golfing time for the Leafs on Friday night when they head back to Boston.
But after watching Wednesday’s game, maybe not. We not only kept up with the Bruins, we outplayed them.
For once, nearly all our stats were even – including faceoffs, which the Leafs could not win earlier in the series.
And, in what’s been a very rough series, the Leafs tossed the Bruins around, outhitting them 71!- 49.
After taking a quick 2-0 lead in the first, fans’ spirits were high; they were laughing, celebrating, assured the Leafs were about to tie up the series.
Even after Boston scored a quick goal to start the second period, fans weren’t too concerned as the Leafs battened down the hatches.
But the Bruins netted two quick goals more than 10 minutes later to go up 3-2 – you could see the concern on fans’ faces then, briefly.
Only briefly, though, because the Leafs tied it back up less than a minutes later – again, fans could feel glory; the energy and assuredness that this game belonged to the leafs was palpable.
Then no scoring in the third, despite the Leafs dominating the Bruins and outshooting them 14-7. A few bad bounces, missed open nets, luck for the Bruins, and off to overtime we went. Too bad.
Too bad the Leafs missed a few more chances in overtime and then again got unlucky.
Phaneuf went for a big hit, missed Horton, hit and slowed down two of his teammates and Krejci was off to the races, down the ice to score his third.
(Krejci now has 10 points against the Leafs in four games. Can someone stop that guy, please?)
Maybe Phaneuf shouldn’t have gone for the hit. Maybe if we had better luck he would have cleanly knocked Horton to the ice, sending the puck deeper into the Bruins' zone.
Either way, the Leafs have an even bigger game coming Friday when they really, really are fighting for their playoff lives.
If the Leafs quickly forget this loss, play the same way and somehow shut down Krejci, maybe we’ll at least get to see another home game.Maybe we’ll even win won at home, finally. That’d be nice.
That’d mean a Game 7 back in Boston and anyone can win those. Below is MacArthu's 3-3 goal, more videos of our goals inside the post, plus, of course, Krejci's OT winner, which shows Phaneuf's hit that allowed it all to happen....
Go Leafs Go. Cheers.
Here's how the crowd outside the ACC reacted when the Leafs tied it up 3-3...
And here's that OT goal we all need to forget, especially the Leafs before Friday's game...
