Let’s try this again, why don’t we.
The boys have another chance to officially clinch a playoff spot tonight when they host the New York Islanders.
A Toronto Maple Leafs’ win combined with a Winnipeg Jets’ loss to the Carolina Hurricanes guarantees the boys a spot in the post-season.
There’s no way we’re not making it, but let’s make it official already. And, while we’re at it, let’s do it against a team we have some recent playoff history with.
The Leafs battled the Islanders in a nasty first round series in 2002 – remember Islanders fans throwing beer at our boys? If not, photo is here. We won in seven.
Let’s crush the Islanders and hope Carolina does us a favour. Heck, let’s crush the Islanders and diminish their hopes of making the post-season.
If the Islanders go on a losing streak after we beat them, and the Jets going on a winning streak after losing to Carolina, the Jets can potentially knock the Islanders out of a playoff spot. That’d be great. Why not have another Canadian team in rather than American?
Carolina is 1-2 against the Jets so far this season. This is the final game tonight in their season series.
Carolina – second last in the East – is playing spoiler and trying to even the series. Let’s root for them tonight, and the Jets thereafter.
This year, we’re 1-1 against the Islanders – but haven’t played that great against them. Our one win came in OT, and our loss was 7-4, a game where we pulled our goalie.
That’s OK – it fits with the situation we’re in. The boys need to stop the bleeding here. It’s no secret we’ve left our goalies out to dry the last two games. And it’s no secret we haven’t been able to roll over the Islanders this year.
We can correct both those mishaps tonight while clinching a playoff spot.
Things to note: Nazem Kadri has yet to score a goal in April. But, last time the Leafs played the Islanders, he had a hat-trick in a 5-4 OT win. Also notable, our captain Dion Phaneuf scored the OT goal. Both these guys can use this game tonight against the Islanders to lead us to a clinched playoff spot.
Below are highlights of that last game, and highlights of Kadri's three goals.
Go Leafs Go. Go Hurricanes Go. Lose Jets Lose. Cheers.
