sad, but inevitably the truth. I guess this is the beginning of the 'wake'? Let me know when the bar is open and the desserts come out. In the words of Billy Shakespeare "We come not to bury the Leafs, but praise them" for their resurgence in the second half and showing us that there is promise for next year! Yes, another year of missing the 'p-word', but it's the closest it's been in many a year so Burkie has made progress, maybe not as fast as most of us would have liked but there is promise in the future based on the foundation he has built. I'll still be here right to the bitter end when the plug is finally pulled so I will wait and say my farewells the the 'boys' then.
VM: I think a group therapy session for all ALF B Toronto chapter may now be necessary, well, at least after Saturday's game ... your call.
VM Replies: A summer meeting is mandatory. An evening on a patio, perhaps?

Feeling a little hysterical and let down.
VM Replies: After Boston choked and gave up three goals in the final three minutes last night, maybe I should have gone with Radiohead's Karma Police.
The universe will deliver the payback to those scoundrels.

Good Morning VM, that Bruin loss was not a let down, it was a monumental collapse. How do the Bruins with Timmy T. in net squander a 3-0 they had halfway through the game? Tonight, I cheer for a Habs and Sabres loss with a big win for the good guys. If the Sabres get a point or more, I will no longer being cheering against the Canes. Still hoping Saturday's game means something...Someone check for vitals, GO LEAFS GO!!!
VM Replies: Good morning, Rooney.
Posted by: Rooney | 04/05/2011 at 07:30 AM
well, no matter what happens Saturday's game will always mean something. they are going to play flipping Montreal! I don't care if they are out of the play-offs, they always have to beat the Habs.
is it just me or the Eastern conference as a whole just sucks? not one single team who is not capable to stink out the joint. unbelievable.
VM Replies: The East better get it together for the finals, that's for sure.

Usually I only watch hockey during the playoffs. I'm glad I followed this season and got some Leafs action for a change. Here's to a better next year.
VM Replies: I was just thinking about how much happier my wife would be if I only watched playoff action over the past six years.

Nice going, Yogi.

VM / Lainey - an evening on a patio in the summer sounds great! I'm definately in! We can then help plot strategies for next year.
See you tonight!
VM Replies: Okay, I'll start thinking of venues. I might even try to get out a couple of the players.
Yes, tonight! This could be Elimination Night!

Good morning Vinay and to all in Leafs Nation,
.
As much as everyone wants it to still happen, looks like most of the media is already writing off the Leafs this year. Is the fat lady ready to sing, or will Cinderella make an appearance instead? Can they get to 90 points?
.
I just heard an interesting situation on the radio: if the Coyotes win the Cup, then by default the Leafs win a share of the Cup as well based on NHL ownership.
Cheers!
VM Replies: Good morning, We BeLeaf.
Posted by: We BeLeaf | 04/05/2011 at 07:59 AM
@TimB - pls don't get hysterical, we need you in your seat tonight. There still is a slim chance we can make it! Need to be positive!
Posted by: Sue | 04/05/2011 at 08:05 AM
You know, in a normal year I could still see the Sabres and 'Canes collapsing enough to make this happen...but clearly this is not a normal year if the past 3 weeks or so have taught us ANYTHING. Is Lecavalier playing tonight, by the way?
The Leafs need to run the table anyhow just to push the Bruins' pick down as far as they can get it. Then I will be pulling for whomever is playing the Bruins and Flyers to knock them out early. Well, maybe not the Habs.
VM Replies: Lecavalier listed as day-to-day, so not sure if he'll be ready for the Buffaloes ce soir.
Posted by: Wandering Penguin | 04/05/2011 at 08:07 AM
Well, to be fair, we knew at the beginning we needed a couple of first line players and certainly a first line centre. As the year progressed and we saw the chemistry develop after the All Star game. We realized that although the top end talent might not be there, the heart, drive and ambition was certainly present. It is a shame if we don't make it, because the eastern conference is coming apart. Boston, Philly, Washington, Rangers, have all been going through slumps, at the time of year when your best players have to be your best players.
Our Leafs could take any of these teams in a seven game series!
Alas, .. sigh .. as so often happens with young colts, the early part of the season was a disaster.
And of course, the dreaded power play, or lack thereof. I really don't know why after a full season of watching and 'coaching' these young colts, Wilson could not devise a power play. A reasonably successful power play would probably have resulted in some post season hockey.
This strikes me as a disfunctional coaching problem - but whom to blame?
While there seems to be more players on the horizon, I would rather, I think, just sit back and say:
It was a good ride for a bunch of young colts - they were in every game. And it ain't quite over yet!
VM Replies: Well said, Robert. Again.
Posted by: Robert | 04/05/2011 at 08:09 AM
Not the most upbeat way to start my morning first all this Ottawa rain and now my hope hurts.
Damn you Rangers.
Any chance we can borrow the results from the Jays opening weekend a sneak them into the Leafs record?
VM Replies: I'm now imagining Bautista on the power play.

The last win by a Leaf goalie other than Optimus Reim was on February 7, when Giguere beat Atlanta 5-4. Since that time the team has gone 15-6-5 and I know at least one loss and one OT loss have gone to Giguere. That means that since a week before Valentine's Day the Reimer-backed Leafs have gone 15-5-4 at the very worst (some other losses may have been Giggy's in relief, I don't know for sure). Not too shabby.
Posted by: Wandering Penguin | 04/05/2011 at 08:27 AM
Good Morning All,
What a total letdown. Five unanswered goals by Boston. Afew of these teams had better start playing some inspired hockey, or me thinks there will be some upsets in the playoffs. Here is hoping for a miracle. Wonder what implications our last game will have for the Habs. Maybe the Habtrolls who have been frequenting this blog, over the last few days should think about it. You know what they say about karma........just saying
VM Replies: Good morning, missideb.
Posted by: missideb | 04/05/2011 at 08:37 AM
G'Morning all,
Sigh... 2 goals in 2 minutes with less then 4 in the 3rd... My hope hurts too. A drink on the patio will help though, count me in... I'm off to look for the Tequila... and then to Buffalo to spike their Gatorade.. ;)
(We're not dead yet, we feel happy!, we think we'll go for a walk)
VM Replies: A walk in the April mist. Not a bad idea, Lil.

...Here to the bitter end!
VM Replies: Indeed, Sarkozy. Let us raise our glasses: To the bitter, chaotic, swirling and lemony end.
Posted by: gettingcozywithsarkozy | 04/05/2011 at 08:54 AM
I'm already dreaming of the patio. Too soon?
VM Replies: Yes, too soon. No plans for reckless drinking shall be made until the words "mathematically eliminated" are heard.
Then it's game on.
Posted by: Wandering Penguin | 04/05/2011 at 08:57 AM
Just out of curiosity Vinay, is there a definite date and place for the Toronto chapter of ALF B scheduled? Is Wendel Clark's Grill been nominated for this occasion?
VM Replies: No date yet. We still have to work out the logistics. You know, I'm embarrassed to say I have never been to Wendel Clark's fine establishment.
Does it have a patio?
Posted by: We BeLeaf | 04/05/2011 at 09:03 AM
Can I dream of watching the Leafs in the Cup finals on that patio?
VM Replies: That seems like a reasonable request, Mr. Penguin.
Posted by: Wandering Penguin | 04/05/2011 at 09:12 AM
I can't remember if the location at 400 & 7 has a patio. There is another location in Oakville, but I have not been there yet. Upon checking their website, they do arrange events, however they may not be big enough to accomodate the masses. I like your idea though of having the event take place outside. Perhaps it can be arranged to have it in Downsview Park where the event reach epic proportions like Woodstock, Live8, etc.
VM Replies: Hilarious. Yes, let's get some bands to perform. I'll try to interest a broadcaster, maybe sell some sponsorships.
Posted by: We BeLeaf | 04/05/2011 at 09:21 AM
Cue the Reaper. The scythe is coming Leafs' fans. Don't duck: it just prolongs the agony.
The team had a remarkable 2nd half... and yet will still struggle to get to 90 points: an indication of just how bad the first half was.
I hate Boston, but I'm hoping for a Montreal/Boston first round match up just the same. There's something about Montreal in the Boston psyche... if Montreal steals a game on Boston's ice watching the doubt creep into Boston's game will be beautiful to behold. (and on this score, as a Habs' fan I've got to thank the Rangers for last night - sorry Leafs' fans)
VM Replies: At this summer event we're now planning, I predict you will be on the receiving end of several noogies.

@Vinay: Ok, I'm on it. And now I have Aerosmith stuck in my head. Cool.

Re: Summer Event - who wants to see if we can rent the ACC??? That should accomodate all of us ... and the bands and the cheerleaders!
If not ... how about Real Sports Bar, right by ACC. Don't know if they have a patio. May be more central than Oakville. Just running thoughts thru my little head. That way it would be easy for me to grab a cab home after a night of reckless drinking with my ALFB buddies!
VM Replies: Real Sports is a neat place. If they could give us the upper lounge, that would be as good as a patio. Maybe even better.
I'll bring my copy of The Passion Returns and get them to loop it on that giant TV.
Posted by: Sue | 04/05/2011 at 09:47 AM
Noogies? Well, I give a mean gas-pedal, so watch out.
A gathering eh? Hmm. Well, Toronto is 2 hours from here, but I am planning on coming to Toronto a couple of times over the summer anyway to see friends so you never know. I might just show up. And if I do, count on me wearing the bleu, blanc et rouge.
Sadly, Princess Mononoke seems to have fallen off the face of the blog of late. She was complaining of an increasingly inhospitable atmosphere... let's hope her disappearance is temporary. If I show up this summer I'll need her formidable presence as reinforcement as we attack you all as racists for not liking PK Subban. Besides, the poor girl has to have some reason to get out of Mississauga for an afternoon.
VM Replies: She was in Montreal the other day and left a couple of notes. The two of you, of course, are invited. I might even get a train ticket for Sensi-Bill to bring him in from Ottawa.

How utterly embarassing to be a Bruin fan this morning! How in the hell do you blow a 3-0 lead! Oh yeah, its the Bruins, who blew a couple of 3-0 leads.Up 3 games in playoffs to Philly, then, up 3-0 in game 7 and lost! The sad thing about last night's game, it could cost Tim Thomas, a man I admire, not only his Vezina trophy, but any hope for MVP. Shame, shame, your names should be altered to the big bad Cubs, cause including the Chicago Cubs of MLB, nobody is afraid of cubs. Needed to vent! We needed help somewhere along the way, and there was absolutely no help from any single team in the entire league. But rest assured, leaf nation, when the gate equilization tax is dispersed, many teams will be holding out their hands and thanking the sucker leafs for the only reason they are even in the NHL! Year after year, our tax is far and away tops in the NHL.
VM Replies: Vent on, Michael. Vent on.
Posted by: Michael C. Nemirsky | 04/05/2011 at 09:57 AM
First noogie knock-out ever.
But didn't I read somewhere that as long as the Leafs are not eliminated they remain cup favorites?Let's drink to that!
VM Replies: You are hereby assigned the role of toastmaster.
Posted by: pinot grigio | 04/05/2011 at 09:58 AM
VM - when deciding on a date for the event. Perhaps a day when the Jays are playing an away game. If the event is downtown, we don't want to run into the masses of Jays fans!
Posted by: Sue | 04/05/2011 at 09:59 AM
You know it's over when someone walks into your office and hands you free tickets to see Washington tonight.
Geez. Will go and applaud our magnificent bastards until my hands are raw.
This is no "late season push" everyone. It's HALF the season. 24-13-5 (if math serves me correctly, that's 42 games.).
Kudos to Burke (can't believe I am saying that) for fixing the pieces that "didn't fit".
And yes, Wendel's in Vaughan has a patio. Now if spring would only arrive.
VM Replies: Free tickets! Now that's...depressing.
Posted by: Billy | 04/05/2011 at 10:08 AM
VM - if you need assistance planning, let me know. I could be the assistant co-ordinator. Upper lounge at Real Sports would be cool. We could get name tags for all, that way it would be like a real homecoming. Maybe a Saturday night? That way it might be easier for our out of town buddies to come down. My mind is churning ....
VM Replies: Okay, I'll email you when the hockey season concludes and we can begin planning.
Posted by: Sue | 04/05/2011 at 10:14 AM
Obviously, if you're paying for a train ticket for Sensi-Bill, you'll be expensing a bunch of plane tickets for the ALFB Vancouver Chapter, right? I mean...right? I'll go wait by my mailbox. Thanks!
VM Replies: We clearly need flight sponsors. Air Canada? Porter? Who wants in on this?
Posted by: Leaf Fan in Lotusland | 04/05/2011 at 10:15 AM
Although, come to think of it, a cross-country train trip would be pretty sweet, too. Anyone know anyone at VIA?
Posted by: Leaf Fan in Lotusland | 04/05/2011 at 10:29 AM
@ LFiL, sorry I didn't get a chance to reply to your post yesterday re: the What Would Reimer Do? t-shirt....make mine an XL.

Cheers!

Hey, we may be out of it, but on the positive side, from the way that lupul has played over the last several weeks I think we've found at least a winger that can play with Kessel, now we just need that center...
One other thought, has anyone noticed that Komisarek has played (relatively) better over the last several weeks with Lashoff? By no means is he going to live up to that contract next season, but with Lashoff he certainly looks like a (relatively) stable defenseman.
@VM, you have an open invitation if you for some reason find yourself in the Chicago area over the summer to get a few drinks with the Chicago ALF B chapter
VM Replies: At the risk of getting pelted me with rotten vegetables, I've also really liked Komisarek's game lately. He's clearing the net, he's feisty, he's using his body. He seems way more confident after that groin injury.
Oh, man. You should have not told me there is a Chicago chapter. I am so ready to make that trip.
Posted by: Matt Taylor | 04/05/2011 at 10:35 AM
Alas we are at the brink. Too bad. They failed in their quest for the playoffs. I believe next year will be a different outcome, but getting through the summer will be like torture waiting for it to get started. I will need some advance notice so I can plan a trip to the patio. This summer is filled with football for me but I definately will try to make the trek from Ottawa so long as there will be beer. There will be beer?
While I am here, even though the team failed to make the playoffs (ok failing, it is not official) This was the most fun I have had cheering for the leafs in a long long time. It was 100% completely because of this blog. Having everyone to cheer with, yell with, joke with and well, just hang with was so much fun, I just can't imagine what it would be like if the Leafs ever make to the finals. Sure the Leafs grew a ton in 2011 but because of you Vinay and everyone else it was a great ride. Thank you for the fun.
VM Replies: Bomber! You definitely need to come down for our drinkfest.
Posted by: Ken Baumgartner | 04/05/2011 at 10:36 AM
Air Canada and VIA? right, they surely will sposor a Leafs fan gadering...
Posted by: Peter | 04/05/2011 at 10:40 AM
lol the Chicago Chapter, at least to my knowledge is mostly just me, not a lot of Leafs fans in a city that's just won a Cup...
VM Replies: We'll find others. They're probably just waiting to be found.
Posted by: Matt Taylor | 04/05/2011 at 10:44 AM
Free tickets for Billy? He must look like Alecia.
There is a bunch of fans in the Exited States; what about their travel costs? Do I hear a sponsorship by something royal? The Royal Bank. The Royal York etc. We really miss the royal aspects of life here.
(Wouldn't that be nice, the Royal Maple Leafs, it has a ring to it)
Posted by: pinot grigio | 04/05/2011 at 10:48 AM
Komisarek has definitely improved. You still don't want to see him out there on an important PK, though, and I stand by my rant of Saturday night. I would LOVE to see him back to his old feisty self by next year. That would solve a huge problem back there.
Posted by: Wandering Penguin | 04/05/2011 at 10:49 AM
How about an Alberta chapter, Edmonton! Count me in for an Air Canada ride. Not VIA, much too long a trip.
Posted by: Michael C. Nemirsky | 04/05/2011 at 10:57 AM
Oh absolutely I'm not comfortable with Komisarek out on an important PK yet, but with the way he's been playing, I think more time with Lashoff might turn that into a pretty servicable pair. Lashoff is a stable enough defender in the same way that Markov was in Montreal, though not nearly as talented, and that may help Komisarek do what he did well in Montreal, namely play with an edge.
Posted by: Matt Taylor | 04/05/2011 at 11:01 AM
Yea, yea, yea Air Canada and Via for sure. Labbatts, Molsons and Upper Canada we definately need one or all of them on board. I got a sponsor. How about the Toronto Maple Leafs? We will need a hotel sponsor too. Maybe TSN or Sportsnet. Charge $10 bucks to get in and give it to charity if you think it will turn into hundreds of people. Surely the Star will kick in a thing or two.
Posted by: Ken Baumgartner | 04/05/2011 at 11:03 AM
Oh Lord! This event in the summer is going to be out of control!!!!
But what fun it will be!
Posted by: Sue | 04/05/2011 at 11:11 AM
it was a great run and i had a great time cheering on the magnificent bastards! Leafs for the cup 2012?
VM Replies: I will be happy with some playoffs next season. That's all I really ask.
Posted by: DanielIsen | 04/05/2011 at 11:17 AM
Count me in for any and all summer get-togethers. Wendel's? Perfect.
I suppose some playoff game might be on during our get-together and we might be mildly interested if it's another Canadian team that isn't Montreal, meaning Vancouver -- not cheering for an outcome, just curious observers -- you know, like Sweden during the War....what's that? Vancouver's two best players are Swedish? Sorry 'bout that. They're twins!? They might become the first brothers to win back to back scoring titles?! Huh. Who knew?
You know, I think it might be helpful if we compared our knowledge of Vancouver. Any Vancouverites (Vancouverians? Vancouvegians?) or ex-Van(etc.) folks on here?
Here's what I can hazily recall from a visit during the heyday of the electronic music scene:
- Our museum is called the ROM -- easy enough. Theirs is called the VAG. It's true.
- No one smokes in the streets. Correction. No one smokes 'tobacco' in the streets
- The cops are rather pushy. They seem to feel extra effort is needed to get your attention (see above). But if ID is needed they'll gladly accept your MEC card....yes, in Vancouver they actually get their MEC cards printed out and laminated. They make weekly purchases, the way we buy groceries.
- Goretex and yoga wear are perfectly acceptable business attire.
- You'll wait a loooong time for that latte. The locals prefer espresso...and you'll wait a long time for one of those, too. You're in a rush? Chill dude. Look there, between those seven condo towers, a mountain. And no, we only have soy milk.
- Go on the Skytrain once, if you have to. I swear it's the old Metro Zoo monorail.
- Yes, the people do seem friendly. No, they aren't as friendly as they seem. You know how an American has accused you at some point of being a passive-aggressive Canadian and you haven't understood the slight? Next time: "E-hem, cough, cough-ouver", hold one hand up and subtly point west with the other.
- You'll be taken out for sushi, probably several times, and be treated like you've never had sushi before or at least 'proper' sushi. Just go with it. Humour them. Remember, you can't be sure where their anger point is and what might push them over the edge.
VM Replies: Wade! You definitely need to be at the event.
It will be interesting to see how the Vancouver Chapter responds to this rather vivid picture you have just painted.
Posted by: Wade | 04/05/2011 at 11:40 AM
I hope Phaneuf or someone addresses the crowd after their last home game.
Posted by: Ken Baumgartner | 04/05/2011 at 11:42 AM
2 rounds would be fun. Just so they can experience a playoff round win.
Posted by: Ken Baumgartner | 04/05/2011 at 11:47 AM
I have read all the foregoing with consumate delight. Please remember that planning any soiree should include the salt covered east coasters. A little forwarning and I would certainly like to return to the city and meet all the faceless names that have made this season such an experience.

Tonight I will have my nose in my textbooks studying for the final test on my current module of school. I will knee deep in pancreative enzymes, amino acids, essential fatty acids, etc., oy vey, my brain already hurts! I will try to check in from time to time to see how everyone is doing.
do you think it would be inappropriate to study nekked with pompoms (in the privacy of my home, of course) to still cheer on the boys in blue and white?
Go Leafs Go, kick some caps ass!

grr... if the Chicago chapter can make the meeting, I feel a sense of obligation to come also. btw Matt, I hear that Chicago has much lower standards for what constitutes a quality stand-up comedy act.
VM Replies: Perhaps we can find venue between the Windy City and Motown.
Posted by: gettingcozywithsarkozy | 04/05/2011 at 12:19 PM
@Wade: As a former Torontonian now living in Vancouver (which makes me a "Vancouverite", for the record), the only thing I really take issue with is your comment about "pushy" cops. Really? Post-G20 Summit, I think that's a bit much. Compared to 52 Division, the guys out here are boy scouts. Remember the Olympics? Tens of thousands of drunks in the streets for two solid weeks and not a busted head in sight.
Posted by: A Leaf Fan in Lotusland | 04/05/2011 at 12:24 PM
@gettingcozywithsarkozy: Hilarious! A Charlie Sheen/Chicago smackdown on ALFB. This blog is broadening it's scope by the minute.
Posted by: A Leaf Fan in Lotusland | 04/05/2011 at 12:35 PM
@gcws: Yes, it turns out Chicagoans are less able to determine a quality stand-up act, the expertise here seems to run more towards the improv end of the comedy spectrum. From what I've heard, the Sheen performance here wasn't much better despite the difference in reaction. Also, due to the demands of law school and business school, I will not be making the trip up, I will however be willing to guide ALF B fans to several of my favorite bars in the Chicago area

@Leaf Fan in Lotusland. Very good points. I wasn't thinking of a comparison with Metro's formerly finest or especially the Cherry Beach Express. I guess I was thinking of the, er, friend of mine who was surprised the cops weren't quite as laid back in comparison to other Vancouverites. I'd love to know your take on the place, for both discussion during the coming CBC Canucks deluge and the fact I have a friend who's a big Whitecaps fan and now that I'm shifting into summer TFC mode any razzing ammuniation will be appreciated.
Posted by: Wade | 04/05/2011 at 12:58 PM
Not as positive for next year as most of you are... perhaps it's my refusal to get caught in the Leaf Fan trap.
The Leafs cannot possibly play an entire season at this pace. They make up on lack of skill with determination and the fear of losing (which has been a pleasure to watch since the all-star break) but through the long season that simply does not last.
Almost happy the Leafs didn't make it, as I am sure they would be far too exhausted by the end of this stint to really do any damage against Philly of all teams.
Can only hope for this season to resume where they left off in the fall. But we have all been hoping since at least '93.

I feel a single tear coursing down my chubby little cheek thinking that this wild ride may be coming to an end. In case the emotion overtakes me and I don't get a chance later, THANKS VM for making this season considerably more bearable than it had any right to be. To my fellow posters, when the inevitable trolls rear their pointy little heads en masse, remember, don't let the bastards wear ya down.
VM Replies: No need to thank me, hoof. But thanks for the thanks. Truth is, this blog simply would not exist without all of you.

So why are the Leafs so under-talented? How good is the MacKulebovski line? Is there a more productive line in the league? And if Lupul lives up to his 7th overall status. Kessel is certainly first line. Do many teams have better third and forth lines? Maybe a few. One strong centre away?

Not the greatest song but it says it all. Still a little residual tingle left.

oakville_girl - that is a tricky question, I think we will all need to see pictures to form a proper opinion.

It ain't a party until I'm there. Which means you can't plan anything until late June/early July. I need to be in Vancity in case of any parades. After that, I'm all yours.
Wade's assessment of the city is fairly bang-on, although I must side with ALFiL on one point as I too have a soft spot for it's cops. (I know/work with several of them and they are excellent folk.) Vancouverites are a special breed, and this is a special place. It's a world class city with a small town feel. And like most beautiful things, it has certain 'airs' about itself. It's almost feminine in character, whereas Toronto is very masculine. When I look at it like that, it's hardly a wonder as to why Vancouver despises the T-Dot so much. You don't appear (however unintentionally!) to brush off or ignore a great beauty without incurring their wrath. (And no, that's not an insult, and yes, I have odd ways of relating to things.)
VM Replies: Whoa. Ms. Boo is Toronto-bound. That changes just about everything.

@negator - Most Leafs fans have enough common sense to know they can't replicate 24-13-5 all season next year without some help. The team still one, maybe two first line forwards, a second pair blueliner to go with Schenn and work the PP, and a reliable backup goalie. These are important pieces and if Burke can fill these holes then I may raise my expectations of this club somewhat. However, it's safe to say that after the turnaround this season and the emergence of several players, playoffs is the EXPECTATION next year... anything less will be considered a let down, whereas the goal this season was to improve and get Boston's pick out of the draft lottery. Mission accomplished.

Okay, as for the Leafs and not getting any help...I bristle somewhat at the suggestion that we need/needed/will ever need help from other teams. We should have helped our bloody selves, as we clearly were capable of doing.
Not fond of whiners and woe-is-me-ers and I sincerely hope there will be none of that going on the Leafs dressing room. If you fail in this life, the sad truth is that you probably deserved to.
You could, I suppose, argue that this season may have only been 'half a failure', but since when was that okay? It's not good enough, and it never will be. Show up next year, play the entire season like you've played the second half of this one, and you're in. In the words of a great woman: Simple as that.

@ VM - shhhhh, don't tell Vancouver I'm leaving! She'll get mad. But yes, lock up your daughters and haul out your jerseys...the prodigal Boo is returning. I was good juju for the Canucks, let's see if I can help out the Buds.

Moe G. With all due respect to what the song represents,I'm afraid the tear in my eye is for what Jefferson Airplane became.

@ Boo. Great characterization of Vancouver as feminine. Has that sexy quality of the university girlfriend who'd borrow your track pants and t-shirts and look fantastic in them, who could outdrink you and was probably better at sports. Saaaaay, I think I'm go for a lunchtime walk past the ACC and get some air right now. Maybe call home. Is it raining out? Bit cold, hopefully?

I have found TPiddy's comments to be some of the most common sense, level headed views on this blog. And it's not just because his last comment was between two off Boo's more....well.....interesting comments.

@ Boo, agree, i hate to rely on other teams. The Leafs have to be good enough to do it on their own. don't care or shouldn;t care about what other teams are doing.

@ Wade - Sadly, while I can still rock the casual look, I have no firsthand knowledge of these sexy sporty co-eds, as I never was one. I am about as uncoordinated as a baby deer and I don't need to drink anyone under the table to get that way. Because I'm a huge dork. My appeal may be far less broad (ha ha - 'broad' get it? Okay, dork humour) but I'm pretty cool with being an acquired taste. ;)
No rain in the Toronto forecast, and in the right part of downtown one can always find some woooo girls wandering about in weather-inappropriate gear! Go forth my friend, and may you find the headlights you seek.

I think it's very likely that more than one of these events will take place out of necessity. Anyone who has tried to even plan a family BBQ in the summer months will know what I am talking about. I predict 70% availability of the interested parties no matter when this soiree is held.
But by no means should that discourage us. Let's make it weekly! Woo hoo! The First Annual International Leaf Nation Pub Crawl!

BTW, I can check to see if the Detroit Eatery has a patio...

Why is it that some people cannot give credit where credit is due? (not referring to posters on this site)
The Leafs have been playing great hockey for months. This isn't a two week stint, when they have already been eliminated, like in past seasons. Nor do we have any past their prime players on the roster. I'm just so tired of hearing all the excuses from other teams when the Leafs win games - reffing was horrible, injuries, and the mother of all excuses - Leafs only won because the other team was having an off game.
Here's a newsflash for you, the Leafs have been one of the top teams since the All-Star Break. So perhaps your team wasn't having an off game. Perhaps this young speedy Leafs team just may have outplayed your team. / Phew, rant over, feel much better now. Must not read comments on other blogs.
GO LEAFS GO!!!

NYR's Callahan breaks his ankle in the last minute of last night's game blocking a Chara shot. Can't see them going far without him. Looking back since March 1, at the games BUF, NYR and CAR played against the conference leaders (Philly, Caps, Bruins and Penguins), you are looking at 2 regulation wins plus 1 OT win in eleven games for our conference leaders. Add the 0 and 3 record by the Habs since March 1st against these three teams and THANKS FOR NOTHING! That's giving up 23 of a possible 28 possible points to the teams the Leafs were chasing. If you can't tell, I now have a serious hate for all other teams in the Eastern Conference. GO LEAFS GO, GO WEST GO!!!

@Rooney - the Leafs have 3 reg wins, 1 SO win and 1 reg loss against the big four in that same span. This raises the question: who in the HELL are they beating to still be at the top of the conference???
Posted by: Wandering Penguin | 04/05/2011 at 03:18 PM
@ Wandering Penguin,
.
I don't know if the Detroit Eatery has a patio, but Schuey's Bar and Grill has one. As far as I know the Habs seating section is in the women's washroom.
Posted by: We BeLeaf | 04/05/2011 at 03:20 PM
@ Rooney, I'm with ya. If I didn't know better, I'd be talking "must keep Leafs out of the playoffs at all costs, because nobody wants to play a team that is showing momentum" conspiracy theories.
Things that make you go hmmmm........
GO LEAFS GO!
Posted by: missideb | 04/05/2011 at 03:25 PM
@missideb, I totally agree with your earlier post, we get no respect for our post allstar record. Maybe we should change our name to the Toronto Maple Dangerfield's!
Posted by: Michael C. Nemirsky | 04/05/2011 at 03:46 PM
I remain keen on 'not mathematically eliminated' so keep cheering and who knows? Tonight watching the game from a full pub with a friend - and hoping this somehow brings the boys some luck. I say we win and Lupul scores. Then we just keep going.
I'm pretty sure it was Moe who posted yesterday about something having shifted in the dressing room at some point in the new year. I agree - I think the team came together. And not that we're without some stars, perhaps a couple guys who may be superstars, but I've always believed a bunch of good players who play TOGETHER will beat a team with one mega-watt star and a bunch of also-rans over the long haul.
I'm in for the patio party too, please :) Multiple dates a good idea as everyone will have some plan, some day, in the summer if there's only one day.

The women's washroom? Potty jokes? Are we in grade four again?
Alright, I'll play along:
I'd rather be in the ladies room than out in the dumpster where the Leafs' fans sit with the rest of the trash.
Or, if you prefer:
I'd rather be in the Ladies room than out of the playoffs.

I just had a look at the standings at the All-Star Game and they are pretty telling. Since then we've gained on everyone in the East except NJ. Among the playoff teams only Buffalo and Washington have come close to keeping pace (which sucks in the case of Buffalo, especially since we beat them three times...their record in other games must be better than ours). We've gained 11 points on the Rangers, 9 on the Habs, 10 on Carolina.
But therein lies the rub. 11 points gained on the 7th-place team and they just eliminated us yesterday. It's easy with those numbers to see why Burke didn't believe in the playoff chase at the deadline; not quite so easy to see why he DOES believe in Wilson.
And between us and the end of the season are the Caps and the Devils, the only other two teams with 40 points since the break. Let's put some daylight in there and truly laim claim to the Beasts of the East since the break.
GO LEAFS GO!!! See you all tonight.

Is the Ye Old Brunswick House still open? What was the name of that lady that sung there? Rockin' Irene? I can't remember much from the early 90s and my undergrad days....

Geoff, did you switch teams? Who said the Habs made the playoffs?
Posted by: Rooney | 04/05/2011 at 04:25 PM
Ah Rooney, we're back to faith - and I have it in my team.
Posted by: Geoff Read | 04/05/2011 at 04:33 PM
Geoff, you can call it whatever you like but the Habs have not clinched a spot yet. When was the last time they beat a playoff team in regulation time (must be over 10 games now)? Hold on to your faith my friend, it might be all you have shortly.
