Caught Saturday night’s performance of Black Watch at Varsity arena. The 7 p.m. show started off late because the stage floor was still wet from being cleaned after the afternoon show. Combined with condensation caused by the summer heat, and the sticky, humid conditions in the arena, an army of the fests volunteers had to pitch in to wipe it dry.
After seeing the physicality of the play, it was obvious why a slippery floor would kibosh any performance of the awesome military drama. In my opinion, it’s certainly the best play you’ll see on an ice rink this year. Likely ever.
But potential viewers should know a few things. Beyond the incredible salty language and loud (VERY LOUD) explosions, the thick, often shouted Scottish accents are sometimes impenetrable in the airy space, which was sweltering during the performance. (Understandably, it was the hottest day of the year so far.)
The other thing is that you are a captive audience. Since the stage is set up between two sets of audience bleachers that are facing each other on the rink's surface, if you leave, you have to walk on the stage, and you are not allowed to return. No in and out privileges here. It’s a two hour show, so as sensible parents would advise, go to the bathroom beforehand. Two people left during the performance we saw. One was with an acquaintance of ours, and left about 10 minutes in. We asked afterward and were told that the heat, humidity and noise made her feel like she was going to be ill.
But as another one woman said afterward, “The conditions really added to the atmosphere. That extra you-were-there feeling.” I’d say it was slightly uncomfortable at times, but totally worth it.
Also checked out the “Aftrparty” across the street at the Skylounge. Chatting with folks afterward, most loved the play, and a gentleman named Omar made a good point.
“The interesting thing to me is that it’s from National Theatre of Scotland,” he said.
“So basically it’s Britain funding a play that’s critical of themselves.”
Even more interesting considering the post show buzz was that Peter MacKay, the minister of defence, also caught the same show. Wonder what we he thought?
