Map of the Week: The Star's neighbourhood map, version 1.0

TORONTO STAR FILE

Shortcut to the map

Thank you for your comments last week. Many have found their way on to the new version of the map.

Along with some changes of colour to sharpen contrast (and getting rid of a grey that was too close to the Google Maps default grey), here are the changes:

1. Extended Corktown down to King, then Eastern, Jarvis to River

2. Rexdale and The Elms: divided with diagonal hydro line, not straight north-south line

3. Leslieville extended west to Booth, south to Eastern, stopping at Gerrard on the north, instead of the CP tracks. Blank triangle created in the area of the Gerrard Square Mall is now in Riverdale

4. Bloor West Village extended east to Clendenan

5. Created Jane and Finch: Jane to park, Shoreham to Grandravine

6. Created Northwood Park: Finch on the north, Keele to the east, Sheppard on south, Black Creek on the west

7. Created Church and Wellesley: Bloor to Carlton, Yonge to Jarvis

8. Created Tam O'Shanter: VP to Kennedy, 401 north to Huntingwood

9. Removed line between Christie Pits and Seaton Village

10. Created Pleasantview: VP, Sheppard, 404 and Finch

11. Don Mills extended west to creek

12. South Annex becomes Harbord Village

13. St. Lawrence entended north to King, west to Yonge

14. Created U of T St. George Campus, with boundaries as shown

15. Created Seven Oaks: Ellesmere and 401, Morningside to creek on west

16. Dublin Heights shrinks, with Sheppard as the northern boundary

17. Created Bathurst Manor: Sheppard, Dufferin, Finch and Don River

18. Flemingdon Park extended east to the Don

19. Leaside: Added business area to the east

20. West Don Lands created. Borders as shown

21. South Riverdale separated from Riverdale at Gerrard.

Having lived in Rexdale for 20 years, I find this corner of the map a little problematic. First of all the map tells me that I live in Humber Summit. Humber Summit Isnt really considered a neighbourhood. Its more like an acknowledgement of the geographical terrain in the area. Also, "Smithfield" and definately "Beaumonde" are fully considered Rexdale by locals. Even part of Humber Summit, Thistletown, and The Elms are considered Rexdale. Ive even heard areas in Emery and "Humberlea" being called Rexdale. Thistletown is more vague since it is fully part of Rexdale, but acknowledges itself as a former village as well. Rexdale should extend further south as well, since even though it is an industrial area people there would say they are in Rexdale. For example at REXDALE Rona and REXDALE Home Depot which are almost at the 409. And you would think that Rexdale blvd. and Rexdale mall would be IN Rexdale, but are actually mislabelled as part of the Elms or just white not even a neighbourhood at all. Rexdale is a much more encompassing neighbourhood than is shown on the map. Ive spent considerable time specifically exploring the ins and outs of my neighbourhood on bike and have talked to countless residents in the area and i can confidently conclude from that that these ammendments are needed, enlarging the Rexdale neighbourhood.

I'd like to see Wellington Place added to your list of Toronto neighbourhoods. This is the area bounded by King, Spadina, Front and Bathurst Streets. It is a relatively new mixed-use community and the Wellington Place Neighbourhood Association (WPNA) has been active for almost 10 years.
Check out the website: www.wellingtonplace.org.

But does anyone know how the Pocket got its name? I know you are dying to find out! It's called the Pocket because it's shaped like a pocket. You can enter or exit the area only via Jones Avenue, hence its very literal name. Even the real estate agents are now using it, according it much cachet, I might add. Signed, a Pocketeer.

In my view, the Canada Census Statistics has a truer and more honest description of areas as defined by income, demographics, and various sociocultural, language profiles and household living arrangements (eg.owner, renter, etc..). This exercise by the Star to 'name' neighbourhoods is an excellent tool to observe the desire of some folks who live in one area in a state of denial while 'aspiring' to be identified in another because it is more 'prestigious'. For example, the area that is east of Laird drive and south of Eglinton is primarily industrial and is more closely aligned with Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park. Yet a very few condo owners and businesses adjacent to the train tracks just north of a few big box stores would like to disassociate with the reality of their geographic and socio/economic/cultural neighbourhood and claim that they are 'Leasiders'. This speaks volumes about a handful of 'emperors with no clothes'. Hopefully, there will be future pride in living in a truly diverse community where people of all walks of life cohabit and this neighbourhood becomes a model of what is desirable.

How can I get a print version?

I only have one half {West side of GTA}. Original map is fine {don't need all the updates if it makes it easier}. Thanks.
