Where the dogs are, redux

AARON LYNETT/TORONTO STAR

    This week’s map looks at dog ownership in the City of Toronto by postal code.

    Information showing the breed of the dog and the first three characters of the postal code of the owner was released recently under access-to-information laws, and is current to mid-November.

    This is the second time I have mapped Toronto dog ownership – breed-by-breed maps from the last iteration (using 2008 data) are here.

    The map shows three areas where dog ownership is high:

  • The east end lakeshore generally, extending into southwest Scarborough, centred on the Beaches;
  • The Yonge St. corridor south of the 401;
  • High Park and areas of Etobicoke near the lakeshore and Humber Valley.

    The city generally north of the 401 has low dog ownership rates.

    Here is a top 10 list, with a dog licence rate per 1,000 of human population:

    M1NScarborough Beaches66.4
    M4LLeslieville/western Beaches66.2
    M4EBeaches66
    M8WLong Branch62.9
    M8ZQueensway62.7
    M4TMount Pleasant Cemetery area61.9
    M4RLawrence Park61
    M4GLeaside59.8
    M4WRosedale58.1
    M6RHigh Park/Roncesvalles56.7

    A smaller version of the map is embedded below - click on an area or zoom in for details.
