Map of the Week: Day care spending

TONY BOCK/TORONTO STAR
Link to the map
This week's map looks at average annual household spending on day care centres by census tract.

The sharp, immediately recognizable pattern shows high spending in the high-income areas along the Yonge St. corridor roughly from the 401 south to Bloor, in the Beaches, Bloor West Village and the Kingsway area of Etobicoke. In the 905, there are pockets of high day care spending in Woodbridge, Thornhill and Newmarket. Conversely, the lower-income checkmark shape across Toronto shows lower rates.

This is recognizably an income map, certainly within Toronto and, as far as I can make out in the 905 as well. Actually, it has similarities to the golf spending map from December.

It's hard to avoid the conclusion that this a map of people who can most easily afford day care. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
