Map of the Week: Bedbug reports

Map: 2009 bedbug reports

This week's map looks at bedbug problems reported to Toronto's public health department as a rate per 1,000 households by postal code.

The map shows a clear pattern, with bedbugs concentrated in a cluster of neighbourhoods in the east downtown, and then stretching into the east end as far as southwestern Scarborough. Parkdale also has high rates.

Shoreline Etobicoke and the Jane/Finch-Black Creek areas are also afflicted, at a lower level. The Annex, the Junction/High Park and Cedarvale also pop out on the map as one-offs.

The data was released by the City of Toronto in response to an access-to-information request.

I had bedbugs from a hotel in Paris, France last summer.I was lucky and did not bring them home with me.If you have never experienced bedbugs, you cannot immagine the problems they cause you.
It is time for the city to take drastic action, or you may be a victim. Put pressure on the city to take this seriously.Do not wait until Rosedale or the Kingsway get invaded.

Toronto born and raised; living betwene Budapest and Beijing now.
Interesting you say 'Paris', as we have never had bed bugs before - I have never even seen them before ... I had a stay in a hostel in Paris (right beside Gare de Lyon). Took them home to Budapest with me I would later find out the day we were leaving back home to Beijing. They even made it to Manchuria with us, when we went to visit my wife's parents. Advice = immediately shake out, brush out all clothes, beddings, etc..., pour lots of boiling water over all clothes and leave to soak in the heat, then immediately wash and hang outside to dry. Keep eye out for them - they are VERY persistent and hide very well in the folds and stiching. Look for eggs in these regions, scrape-out with knife.

Why doesn't the color key match the map?

The key has to be displayed as opaque colours, while the map overlay has to be displayed as translucent.

This pic makes me want to throw up. I am so afraid I get these little creatures and am living in a building that has them. I think I would die!

My building has been infested by used furniture. What ever you do do not get sucked in by these companies that give you a guarantee. The only thing they can guarantee is that they will take your money and 2 cans of Raid would have the same effect.
