Hello Sandy,

Your column today brings tears to my heart - memories of happy times in the local playground association, giving time as a skating-swimming-hockey instructor, summer school instructor, life guard for special events, and youth organizations; - memories of times when I wondered why me? why so much violence, hatred, and abuse around me?; - memories of special people who saw through my anger, and gave me what the CCAC has been giving to other children: a safe place to grow into our talents, discover our interests, and feel loved; - and more recently, memories of people who, like you and Marty, become a friend.

Volunteer work, or "social practice" as it is called here, is also valued as a character-building activity with a good dose of ethics, communication skills, social skills, and a growing awareness of responsibility, generosity, and kindness to humanity. While the approach differs greatly, the results are similar: young people feel their society welcomes them as they grow into the young adults they wish to be, regardless of family wealth and background. These limited contributions - from young volunteers - are valued and treated as essential since most students must take part in such activities in order to receive their university degree.

This is definitely one of the "feel-good" columns I enjoy reading.

Thank you,

Sandy Naiman

Hello, Sonia...

What a remarkable comment. Bittersweet. Powerful. Resonant. Wise. I love your insights. I love your honesty. You certainly have captured the spirit of the CCAC and all its benefits to the children we serve, beyond paint and crayons and violins and keyboards and all of its many offerings.

Did I mention that I'm going to be creating a CCAC newsletter? Attending recitals and art shows with my camera and my notebook and "reporting" again! I'm so excited about this.

I cannot wait to tell my Chinese students that what I'm teaching them is "social practice" ... maybe they will appreciate that. Do you think?

Your excitement just jumps off the screen as I read your words. I'm so pleased that this post was meaningful to you.

Hugs until our next Skype date, okay?
