Randy Starkman's
Olympics blog

  • Want to get a handle on how Canada's doing on the road to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics? You're in the right place. Randy Starkman has covered Team Canada at 11 Olympic Games starting with 1984 in Sarajevo, where he got to see speed skating legend Gaetan Boucher win two gold and a bronze. Starkman's got the inside track on our top athletes and shares it in his blog, as Canada bids to own the podium in Vancouver and Whistler.

So great to get the parent's perspective on going to the Games. They are so often unheralded and yet, are so integral to the athletes getting themselves there in the first place. Hats off to you for dealing with all that bureaucracy, just to see your son compete -- I'm sure it will be more than worth it!

Our daughter, Margot Shumway, is competing with the US rowing team in China. We're traveling there with our oldest son on August 7. I just started a blog (margotrowforgold@blogspot.com) and was hoping to connect with other parents. My parents and most of my family are Canadian. My dad, Archibald Dixon Rollit, was an Episcopalian priest who emigrated to the US after he did his stint in WWII overseas with the Canadian army. So, lots of my family is still in Canada (from Vancouver, BC to Winnipeg to Toronto to Montreal, etc). and both my parents were accomplished athletes. Anyway, so cool to read more from other parents. We are a lucky bunch. Just getting there is a thrill! Good luck to everyone and if you have any blogging tips let me know because I was hoping to connect to other parents and read about their experiences. Julia
