The hot news down at Klaus, the contemporary furnishing and decor store at 300 King Street East - also home to artist Thrush HOlmes' studio, btw - is the arrival of an exclusive line from Moooi, the design house founded by Marcel Wanders, whom I write about in this week's New in Homes section. The pics below will illustrate why they're worth going to see, even if you can't afford them ($$$$). But it's not the only reason to drop into Klaus, which has a fascinating, uniquely Canadian backstory. The current incarnation is run by Klaus Nienkamper, son of Klaus senior, a German immigrant who began importing and manufacturing furniture back in the sixties. By the seventies, when much of Toronto was awash in country pine and macrame, the store became the leading source of contemporay design. It still is, and the affable Nienkemper shares his father's eye for classic modern design that's distinct, classic and wholly beautiful.
