RICK MADONIK -  Just after the stroke of midnight, the crowd celebrates at New Year's Eve festivities at Nathan Phillips Square for the annual City TV production which rings in the year.

TARA WALTON - Eminent Canadian artist, musician and Michael Snow collaborator Jon Oswald chats with a friend over a drink inside of  his bar/gallery "Art + Drinks" on Dundas West. The space is a veritable mini-museum of famous Canadian video artists, complete with cocktails.

RICK EGLINTON - Steam rises off Lake Ontario along the Toronto Waterfront as the temperature dipped well below seasonal.

CARLOS OSORIO - Diane Molenaar walks with her Jack Russell Terrier Beatrice along a path at Grange Park during a cold afternoon in Toronto.

 KEITH BEATY - Kayla Le, 16 month-old, at the 27th Annual Lunar New Year Festival (Tet Festival 2012) for the Year of Dragon.

CARLOS OSORIO - "Happy Happy," a 76-year-old ex-con who turned his life around and changed his name accordingly.

VINCE TALOTTA - Daniel Radcliffe, the Harry Potter star, comes to Toronto to talk about his new movie The Woman in Black, in which he tries to put Harry Potter behind him.

 RICHARD LAUTENS - As he descends the escalator, a man takes a photo of the felt installation in the main lobby called Strip Tease by Raw Designs at the 2012 Interior Design at the Metro Convention Centre. 

COLIN McCONNELL - Memorial on Unwin Avenue for Leanne Freeman, prostitute who was shot dead in the Portlands near Tommy Thompson Park.

RICK EGLINTON - Sevan Tosun of AST Jewellery deals with a lot of couples looking for the perfect engagement ring. Tosun shows some of his handy work with a ring that he has created set with 125 diamonds  and is valued at approximately $4,500.00. Tosun learned his craft from his family in his homeland of Armenia.

RENE JOHNSTON - Archbishop Thomas Collins will become a Cardinal on February 18th in Rome.

BERNARD WEIL - Shawn Vella, 10, of Cookstown, gives Shaynee a hug while at SickKids Hospital. Shaynee is a trained wheaten terrier therapy dog which visits children, once a week, at SickKids with her volunteer owner, Michelle Pincus. 

STEVE RUSSELL - Brendan Rowland controls the head of Topthorn.  Topthorn and Joey are the main horses in the play War Horse. Three actors operate the horse. Rowland is the "Head" and he is responsible for all the horses head movements as well as the ear and mouth movements. He also does the horses' dialogue. Two actors are inside the bamboo frame of the horse. The "Heart" is responsible for the front legs and the breathing for the horse and the "Hind" is responsible for the hind legs and tail.War Horse, will run at the Princess of Wales Theatre starting February 10, 2012.

 LUCAS OLENIUK - Mary Archer photographed in Toronto on Tuesday, January 10, 2011.  Mary sustained brain damage while choking as she recovered from surgery inside of St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.

DAVID COOPER - The Acura NSX concept to be built in Ohio is unveiled at The North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

STEVE RUSSELL - Sergeant Ryan Russell's badge number sits on a chest of drawers in his home. Sgt. Ryan Russell was killed on duty a year ago by a man driving a snow plow.

RICHARD LAUTENS - A man takes a stealth picture of Kat Brightwell, 18, who has a TTC sticker on the outside of her underwearduring Toronto's fifth annual no-pants day.  Approximately 100 people hopped on the subway at the Museum stop, took their pants off and rode the train to Eglinton station and back again. The whole thing is an effort to bring some humour to the city.  Up to 50 cities take part in the event.

STEVE RUSSELL - Mayor Rob Ford wipes his face during debate as Toronto City Council debated and voted in favour by a 23-21 vote on a motion put forward by  councillor Josh Colle to take to 15 million dollars of the surplus to prevent some cuts in Toronto.

LUCAS OLENIUK - Protestors squared off with police in front of Toronto city hall after a demonstration against city budget cuts turned violent.

RICHARD LAUTENS - Brian Burke greets Police Sgt. Jim Patterson riding Moose, a horse donated to the mounted unit by Burke and given the name Moose. It was the nickname Burke had for his son. Toronto's PFLAG presented its distinguished "Ally Award" to Brian Burke, who added his voice to Toronto PFLAG's message of the ongoing struggle to stop homophobia and bullying.

 RICHARD LAUTENS - Developer Jared Menkes in an alley beside the location where the new Fabrik development will be built on Richmond street at Spadina.

COLIN McCONNELL - Duma, the incredible waterskiing Jack Russell terrier takes to the lake at the Toronto International Boat Show.

RICHARD LAUTENS - Scotty Newlands sings the anthem with members of each of the Canadian Armed forces who were out for the ceremonial face-off as The Toronto Maple Leafs took on the New York Rangers.

STEVE RUSSELL - Dion Phaneuf takes the puck off the face late in front of Nik Antropov in third period action as the Toronto Maple Leafs shut out the Winnipeg Jets 4-0.

STEVE RUSSELL - Toronto Maple Leafs' centre David Steckel leaps in front of Dwayne Roloson in third period action as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 7-3.

TARA WALTON - Toronto Maple Leafs' Joey Crabb prepares to put one past Minnesota Wild goalie Nikilas Backstrom.

RICHARD LAUTENS - In third period action, Toronto Maple Leafs right wing Nikolai Kulemin was knocked off balance by Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall. The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3.

LUCAS OLENIUK - Toronto goaltender Jonas Gustavsson is checked by Montreal's Tomas Plekanec in the third period.

ANDREW FRANCIS WALLACE - Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Komisarek stands in as a goalie during practice at the Mastercard Centre.

 RICHARD LAUTENS - In first half action, Toronto Raptors power forward Amir Johnson hangs on amid the players grabbing for the ball. The Toronto Raptors hosted the New Jersey Nets.

RICHARD LAUTENS - In second half action, Toronto Raptors small forward Linas Kleiza and Indiana Pacers power forward Tyler Hansbrough fight over the ball. The Raptors lost to the Pacers 95-90.

STEVE RUSSELL - Dwayne Casey reacts to a blown assinment in second half action as the Toronto Raptors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 92-77.

STEVE RUSSELL - Goaltender Matt Roik makes a stop on a wrap around attempt by Cody Jamieson in front of defender Stephen Hoar as the Toronto Rock beat the Rochester Knighthawks 13-11.

RICHARD LAUTENS - In first half action, Toronto's Phil Sanderson gets a facefull of stick as he intervenes to protect goalie Matt Roik from Calgary's Geoff Snider in the Toronto Rock season opener.

STEVE RUSSELL - Doug Gilmour gives up on the helmet in favour of a hockey sock in -9 C weather in the Alumni Game between Toronto Maple Leaf and Montreal Canadiens at the Outdoor Classic at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton.

STEVE RUSSELL - Jim Wilkes signs off on his last day at the Toronto Star, See Jim's favourites from 36 years at the Star
