TIFF: Famous Faces

Celebrities are famous for their faces.
A famous face in real life can look quite different than on the big screen.

I was sure to photograph close in on the faces of most of the celebrities that came in front of my camera this year during TIFF. It reminds me how human these people are and how odd it must feel to be recognized almost everywhere and have your photo taken.

So here are some rather normal looking people who just so happen to be famous:

Every photographer seems to have an event they love to cover and they would love to cover it every year.

With some it is TIFF, others the Indy, others Rogers Cup Tennis, others fashion week, and etcetera.

With me, it is also a guilty pleasure, it is the annual pizza eating contest up in Barrie.

It has been going on for three years and features one of the best eaters in the world, Takeru Kobayashi.

It is amazing to watch a 140 pound man pack away 10 pizzas in 12 minutes, incredible!

Staff at Pie Wood Fired Pizza Joint prepare 75 Margherita pizzas for the competion. On the menu the pizza is called the Kobi 43 in honor of the 43 slices he ate in competition the previous year.

Catching lights at TIFF

When photographing a red carpet you sometimes catch other camera flashes going off in your photo. Most of the time this ruins a photo but sometimes you can save it. These photographs are the result of light accidents which together make a series of photographs which aren't perfect but are definitely a twist from the traditional glamour shots from the red carpet.

Best of August

Budi, a 6-year-old Orangutan at Toronto Zoo. Budi is one of two sumatran orangutans at the Toronto Zoo who are being trained to use an iPad. Currently, they love to watch videos of other orangutans but the hope is to use the devices for training and learning. (Rick Madonik)

As usual, August fell somewhere between the feast or famine when it came to photography at the Toronto Star. Steve Russell continued his endless effort of supplying great pics from LONDON 2012. The Olympics dominated the sports story for the month of August, whereas the discovery of various body parts in Mississauga and Scarborough, dominated the news angle.
