On a personal note... Hong Kong, the city where my family is from, also faces a similar problem. The city is quickly growing outwards, with new apartment buildings popping up in places that used to be the outskirts. It's distressing to think that my cherished memories of the idyllic fishing village of Tai O (a very photogenic place to visit, if you're ever in Hong Kong) may one day become a memory, or a mere tourist site without actual working fishermen. Come to think of it, it's very much like the local concerns in the GTA about preserving Ontario farmland and agricultural work.

Romans bewildered by a rare snowstorm borrowed children's beach pails and trowels or used government-issued shovels to dig their cars and sidewalks out from a few inches (centimeters) of slush and snow, which kept many buses off streets and tourists locked out of the Colosseum and other monuments. The snow left the dome atop St. Peter's Basilica draped with a white fluffy mantle and blanketed ancient arches in the Roman Forum, which, along with many other outdoor monuments and ruined, were closed by authorities for fear the public would slip on icy stone paths.
