A fisherman walks between traditional wooden boats on the shore of Lake Kivu in Goma, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. "There are no big fish because of the gas, we only catch small whitebait" said one fisherman, referring to the carbon dioxide and methane gases which saturate Lake Kivu, posing the risk of a limnic eruption. A limnic eruption is a rare natural disaster in which dissolved carbon dioxide suddenly erupts from deep lake water, suffocating wildlife, livestock and humans.
