This fun gallery is inspired by a workplace prank played between myself and fellow photo editor (who is now my boss) Taras Slawnych.  We would often taunt each other by leaving a "yawning" image on our screen when we would leave the remaining night editor on duty to wrap up the shift into the wee hours.  Here are a few classics from our files.

This NASA composite handout provided April 23, 2012 shows a dramatic new image of the star-forming region 30 Doradus, also known as the Tarantula Nebula because its glowing filaments resemble spider legs. The nebula is located in the neighboring galaxy called the Large Magellanic Cloud, and is one of the largest star-forming regions located close to the Milky Way. Editor's Choice Picture of the Day - NASA Captures Giant Prominence Eruption - April 17, 2012

A beautiful prominence eruption shot off the east limb (left side) of the sun on Monday, April 16, 2012. Such eruptions are often associated with solar flares, and in this case an M1 class (medium-sized) flare did occur at the same time, though it was not aimed toward Earth. This event, which is still in progress, was seen by NASA’s SDO satellite.

This NASA image obtained March 27, 2012 shows wispy tendrils of hot dust and gas glowing in this ultraviolet image of the Cygnus Loop Nebula, taken by NASA‚€™s Galaxy Evolution Explorer. The nebula lies about 1,500 light-years away, and is a supernova remnant, left over from a massive stellar explosion that occurred 5,000-8,000 years ago. The Cygnus Loop extends more than three times the size of the full moon in the night sky, and is tucked next to one of the 'swan‚€™s wings' in the constellation of Cygnus. The filaments of gas and dust visible here in ultraviolet light were heated by the shockwave from the supernova, which is still spreading outward from the original explosion. The original supernova would have been bright enough to be seen clearly from Earth with the naked eye.

Editor's Choice Pictures of the Day - Smithsonian Photo Contest Finalists - March 6, 2012

This is a selection of Smithsonian magazine’s 9th annual photo contest finalists. The contest has attracted over 14 thousand photographers from   over 100 countries. The five categories include —The Natural World, Americana, People, Travel and Altered Images (for photographs that have been manipulated).

Smithsonian photo editors have selected 50 finalists, 10 in each category, which will be displayed on the Smithsonian website. Ultimately, the editors will select one winner in each category, as well as one grand prize winner. Readers are invited to select an additional winner by voting for Readers Choice  for their favorite image on the site The voting period will be open from March 1-31, 2012.  All photos © Smithsonian.com
