The ironic moustache question

France's Mathieu Crepel tried to land a couple of double corks in last night's snowboard final but missed the second - now the big question is what's with the painted-on moustache, Mathieu? From the NYTimes.com's live blog:

"With exception of his mustache,” the Cypress Mountain announcer said, “this kid is the real deal.”

Ironic pose? Fashion statement? French avant-whatever? Too bad this kid's event is over. We may never know, with L'Equipe's video report and q&a skipping over the matter, other than to mention the whole team was in on it. Great gimmick. And much easier to wash off than a playoff beard.
