Don't let your babies grow up to be journos

In the "that's-not-news-that's reality" department, we bring you the newest poll from Angus Reid - just before we head to the career counsellor.

Headline: Politicians Garner the Lowest Level of Respect Among Canadians

Priests and journalists see significant drop in level of respect since 1984; doctors only group to see an increase.

While the politicians we cover now stand at 25 per cent in terms of public respect, journalists apparently have suffered the biggest slide in that area in the past 24 years, according to the poll - going from 73 per cent in Canadians' esteem in 1984 to 49 per cent today.

Given the treatment of journallists by the Harper regime one wonders if the poll was taken exclusively amongst members of the Conservative Party? Joking aside, the result is troubling as it does seem to offer encouragement to the strongly anti-democratic tendencies we see emanating from Ottawa these days. Even the Auditor-General isn't immune, it seems.

Stephen Harper doesn't respect journalists you say?
How do you know?
Well - he just took away one of their favourite toys that they use to dredge for scuttlebutt about what games he's up to behind closed doors....just breaking news....

It is unfortunate that journalists have lost the respect of Canadians. I would suggest that in part it is because there is a lack of depth to the reporting. I am particularly interested in political reporting and there is too much focus on allegations and not sufficient time spent truly investigating issues (whether that be issues raised by scandals or issues raised by policy). This has been particularly evident south of the border during this primary season but we also see it here. I would also note that Canadian journalist seem to be incapable of reporting in a multi-party political system. There are more than two parties in our parliament and more reporting on the NDP (and the Bloc) is all the more important given the fact that neither of the old-line parties are able to convince a majority of Canadians that they are fit and able to form a majority government. Canadians clearly don't like much of what they see, and what they see most in the media are the Liberals and the Conservatives.
