Layton stands in Obama's shadow

As we reported here a while back, NDP Leader Jack Layton will be in Denver this August for the Democratic convention. But that's not the only event this summer where he'll be standing in Barack Obama's shadow. Tomorrow, a day after Obama's speech to the Steelworkers' convention in Las Vegas, the NDP leader will be on hand as well.

“Unions that reach beyond borders, like the United Steelworkers, have a great deal of power to force change that will make our world a better place,”  Layton says, in a news release just issued by the NDP.

“By forming a united front, the steelworkers will have the ability to push international governments to act on issues like climate change, as well as to work together with their international partners for trade deals that are better for their members.”

Comments

President Obama and the probable Dem control of both branches of the US government (and presumably, after eight years, an increased Dem control of the judiciary) _should_ be Canadian Big Labour's biggest nightmare. If anyone thinks that Bush and the Reps are being protectionist, they ain't seen nothin' yet.
Does anyone think that a Dem-controlled congress and presidency would stand idly by and watch auto factories in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania &c &c close down before plants in that foreign country Canada?
Jack!! and his big labour buddies should be afraid. Be very afraid.

Another comment (if our hostess will allow)
Obama is no less likely to protect the interests of the US in foreign policy (it _is_ his job, after all, right?).
Jack!! and his fellow travelers won't have Dubya and his gang of Reps to blame when, for instance, Pres Obama keeps troops in Iraq longer than Jack!! would like. (And Obama has said, in the last day or two that he would take the advice of the commanders on the ground on the timing pull-out, not much (if at all) different from W or McCain).
Imagine the gnashing of teeth when Jack!! hitches his wagon to Obama for the Truthness and Light and Change to find that Obama is, after all, President of the _United States of America_.

This is nothing more than a desperate attempt by Layton to convince Canadians that he's not just a local version of Ralph Nader.

The Democrats are to the right of the Liberal Party of Canada, so if Layton doesn't find the Democrats too right wing than surely he can support the Liberals. Maybe if the NDP just folded up their tent, we could get the Conservatives out of office. If Layton is looking for someone with similiar views to his, he should look to Ralph Nader, not Obama.

Enough about the DNC!! Isn
