Scaring up some cash

While Conservatives never need an excuse to drum up a bit of cash (they're experts at it), I note this new fundraising letter with interest.  Most intriguing, perhaps, is the  mention of a full review on affirmative action. Did I not see Stockwell Day say last week on TV that the system was working great? Drive on, nothing to see here?  So why the mention again? I guess we can only conclude that people who don't like affirmative action also have deep pockets.

Meanwhile, I'm aboard the Liberal Express, and apparently this should scare the bejesus out of me. I wish someone had warned me first.

Getting things done... In English |  Friday, July 30, 2010

 Dear XXXX,

The "dog days of summer" are with us, and Michael Ignatieff's "Just Visiting Express" is making its way across the country. It's clear Ignatieff is on the road for one reason only...to improve his image. He is desperately trying to change his image from elitist visiting professor to man of the people.

But while the Liberal leader grasps at style, your Conservative Government is focused on getting things done. We're working hard to bring prosperity, security, and a bright future for Canadians through our efforts at home and abroad. In recent weeks we've announced: Investments to deliver our armed forces with the tools they need to get the job done overseas. Agreements with the US, strengthening our commitment to open borders and free markets with our largest trading partner. Strategic investments in research facilities and equipment at colleges and polytechnic institutes across Canada. Improvements to our security by imposing increased sanctions against Iran. Re-affirmed support for abolishing the long-gun registry. The launch of a review of affirmative action hiring practices to ensure federal hiring is fair. Continued strategic investments across the country to create jobs now, and jobs for the future.

While Mr. Ignatieff continues his awkward pursuit of photo ops, Prime Minister Stephen Harper continues his solid leadership. His steady hand has already brought us through an economic crisis that swept the entire world. His continued leadership means a united Canada with low taxes, freedom, and prosperity at home and a higher standing in the international community.

The alternative is almost too scary to think about-a Coalition government in Ottawa. Canada would be put in the hands of socialists, separatists, and Liberals, "led" by a visiting professor after 34 years away. Meddling government, high taxes, and weak leadership would be just the beginning. There's only one way to prevent this nightmare from becoming reality-a Conservative majority government. And there's only one way that this can happen-through the support of Canadians like you. The stakes are high and your help is crucial. Please, make a contribution of $200 or $100 right now by following this link. Your support is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Irving R. Gerstein, C.M., O.Ont. They're such blatant bullies.

"while Harper continues to solidify" literally. He's becoming more and more of a solid lump of darkness as the months wear on.

"I hope you've been able to take advantage of this summer season to relax a bit and spend more time with family. I'd like to take a moment to tell you about our
Conservative government's measures to keep you and your family safe from crime."

... well I *was* relaxing until this arrived ...

Harper's solid base ( 22% of voters) agree completly with the content and tone of his money raising letter .

What scares the " bejesus out of me" is nobody is calling the PMO out on their Privacy lie .( except for one lonely Canadian journalist )

"How the federal government can really defend privacy "

Hi Susan, I have a question for Michael Ignatieff, if you could ask him for me? "What would the Liberals do differently to tackle the issue of organised crime?" ( http://fairwhistleblower.ca/content/corruption-and-cover-w5 ) The negative social and economic impact of organised crime affects the lives of all Canadians. We need a government that will produce measureable results with respect to mitigating organised crime both at home and abroad. There is no room for obtuse when questions like this are put on the table, the answers must come forthwith - without undue delay.

So much of that letter is just laughable! The most ridiculous is "His continued leadership means ... a higher standing in the international community." When in fact, our reputation has never been worse. The best way to deal with this is to give money to the Liberals.

Fintrac was put in place to catch organized crime and terrorists . Harper beefed up the Fintrac law its funding by $5 billion over 5 years starting in 2006 .

According to the 2008 privacy commissioner report Fintrac is breaking the beefed up Harper law , is not catching terrorist/criminals and is just secret Soviet style spying on little people .

Unlike the Census this IS a privacy issue and unlike the Census is broke .

Liberal , Conservative or NDP should spend their energy fixing problems like this instead of jockeying for power like the fund raising letter above .

do you not think something's wrong if people have to be scared and always living in fear to try to get votes?

It's a form of terrorism isn't it?

I don't know if it's a form of 'terorism', MyThought, but it sure is a disgusting form of slanderous fearmongering and perpetration of lies. Most Canadians know that coalitions are a legit and often beneficial form of government.

People should remember that the "conservative" party is a combination of the Conservative, Reform and Alliance Parties.

If it looks like a 'coalition', and smells like a 'coalition' (according to the Connies)...

It makes them uber-hpocritical as well.

Perhaps the Conservatives should be scaring up more cash for security? Francine Kopun's feature in yesterday's Toronto Star ( http://www.parentcentral.ca/parent/news%20%20features/article/842467--posting-pictures-online-reveals-more-than-you-know#comments ) is probably going to scare up the attention from both the government and the opposition to give it some serious consideration. It's hard to imagine that so much information can be gathered by anyone from simply posting a photograph on the www? It begs the question - "Why then can't we find Osama Bin Ladin???"
