There's only one "i" in election
John Ibbitson, in The Globe, is convinced that Ignatieff is going to provoke an election in the New Year.
John Ivison, in the National Post, puts this interpretation to Ignatieff and receives the reply: No, that's not what he means.
In one of his earlier interviews, Mr. Ignatieff suggested that the party and the electorate are ready for a spring 2011 election. But when I put it to him that this sounds like he is itching to go to the polls, he was more circumspect.
"For nine months, we've been saying we disagree with their fiscal and economic policy. ... I'm not saying anything today I haven't been saying for nine months."
Confused? So am I.

Won't happen. Mr Layton has already stepped up to the microphone and said the NDP can be bought. One or two peripheral social spending bones that he can toss to his "Make the Rich Pay!!" dogs and the Conservatives will survive the budget vote. Mr Ignatieff wins (if you can call it that) by enabling his Party to vote en masse to oppose the document, and wins again by not having to suffer (for now) the humiliation of being waxed at the polls while he continues to dogpaddle around the cesspool looking for a reason to convince people to vote Liberal. The only thing that possibly will trigger a Spring election will be a couple of successive public opinion polls that put the Tories in a position to win a majority. Then Harper will engineer his current government's own downfall and Bob's your uncle.
