'Bob Rae' is what Jack Layton government would look like, Tories say

KINGSTON – Conservative Leader Stephen Harper has a fresh line of attack on surging NDP Leader Jack Layton thanks to an enthusiastic supporter here.
“Friends, what would an NDP government, backed by Mr. Ignatieff and the Bloc Quebecois, actually look like?” Harper rhetorically asked about 300 cheering Tories at Minos Village Restaurant.
“Bob Rae,” shouted an elderly man.
“That’s a good answer,” said Harper, making a rare deviation from his carefully crafted stump speech script.
The senior’s pithy response clearly resonated with Harper, who stepped up his criticism of Layton, stoking fears of a coalition of a coalition propped up by Michael Ignatieff’s Liberals and Gilles Duceppe’s Bloc Quebecois.
“The risk? A very real risk, another minority Parliament with an NDP government – exactly like the man said – like you had in Ontario.”
Speaking above the boos aimed at Rae, he continued: “Raising spending enormously, raising taxes, raising prices, killing jobs, killing the recovery.”
Rae, of course, governed Ontario from 1990 to 1995 but later abandoned the NDP and is now the Liberal MP for Toronto Centre.
Outside the Kingston rally, a few dozen protesters loudly heckled Harper, banging on the side of marked campaign buses and swearing at them.
