It's about time this public editor started blogging
As public editor of the Toronto Star, I have the privilege of writing a regular column in Canada's largest newspaper about journalistic issues that matter to readers. But, in this world of wired interactivity that journalists now work within, writing a newspaper column can feel somewhat like delivering a carefully-scripted monologue in an auditorium filled with people who want to storm the stage to speak their mind.
My role at the Star involves explaining journalism to readers and readers to journalists. Clearly, to do that most effectively, it's high time I started to blog. A column is after all only half a conversation. But, a blog can bring that conversation full circle, allowing journalists and their audiences to share the podium of opinion and learn from each other.
Through this blog, I'll try to answer your questions about the Star's journalism and invite comment from newsroom journalists and readers about the many journalistic discussions that take place in our newsroom every day. We'll talk about journalistic ethics and excellence and the inevitable gap between journalistic ideals and the realities of daily journalism.
I don't think a blog is the place to find, or communicate definitive answers. But, I expect it can indeed serve as a forum to enhance understanding and provoke thought and I'm looking forward to sharing this stage with you.
