This just in ... sort of

Man, you guys and gals have been busy filling the comment section, whch is excellent to see.

Just got off the plane from Atlanta, where it was going to be about 23 C today by the way, to find a couple of waiting e-mails you should know about.

First came from an NBA spokesman who says the league is in the process of reviewing the Horford-Ford incident. No idea when anything will be decided but we'll keep you posted. The league does, however, review Flagrant 2s as a matter of course so I wouldn't read too much into that.

And, as you may already know, looks like T.J. will be back here later this afternoon or tonight. Am told he's feeling better, medical checks didn't find anything horrificly wrong this morning and should wing his way home tonight. Hope he's not on one of those tiny Sopwith Camels Air Canada flies to Atlanta. Maybe Larry Tanenbaum will send the company jet to get him.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, again.

Be back later from pre-game availability if there's news.

Oh, don't forget, Friday morning is mailbag morning, just click here to send along your submissions.

Comparing Horford and Bertuzzi.

It's clear that Horford didn't intend to do the damage he did, but that doesn't mean it was an accident. He clearly swung for Ford's head, and clearly meant to give him a VERY hard foul. He's responsible for the results of his actions. It reminded me of a hit a few years ago in a different league.

Bertuzzi: Hit Moore in the head from behind.
Horford: Hit Ford in the head from behind.

Bertuzzi: Moore's head hit the ice as he fell, causing more damage.
Horford: Ford's head hit the ice as he fell, causing more damage.

Bertuzzi: Doing what he was told to do. (enforcing; showing Moore he can't get away with things)
Horford: Doing what he was told to do. (flagrant fouling; showing TJ he can't get away with breakaways)

Bertuzzi: Didn't intend to put Moore in hospital.
Horford: Didn't intend to put Ford in hospital.

Bertuzzi: Acted recklessly, and was sorry about his actions afterwards.
Horford: Acted recklessly, and was sorry about his actions afterwards.

Bertuzzi: Suspended indefinitely.
Horford: Possibly only a one game suspension?

Which is the league that supports violence against its players? Which is the league that turns a blind eye to violence?

It doesn't matter that Horford didn't mean to hospitalise Ford. The fact is, he did. The NBA needs to send a message that head shots (especially from behind!) are not acceptable, at all. Even if you are a 'class act'.

Bertuzzi: Knew what he was doing.
Horford: Stupid rookie mistake.

Thane: You're kidding, right?? The 2 incidents are not even remotely close.

  • Doug Smith has been a sportswriter for more than 30 years, a journey that's included seven Olympic Games, numerous and varied championships and more dreary regular season games than he'd care to remember. Here, he'll talk about them all, as well as current events and pop culture. (Just don’t ask him about music nowadays — it's not his cup of tea).
