Why does everyone refer to Jamario Moon as 'Young'?

He is 28 years old and quite frankly I think what you see is what you are going to get....not that it's horrible, but it's not great either.

Paul T.

I can't believe memphis traded a first round pick for navarro when hes a unrestricted free agent and the only reason he would resign would be to play with gasol, but they traded gasol.

Hey Doug, not that it really matters anymore (either way, still a great deal of respect for Jose for putting team first) but since the media made such a big deal about how Calderon came forward to give up his spot.... there is an interesting article in a Spanish newspaper where Calderon (in spanish) states he was asked by by coaches/and management to give up his spot.

http://www.marca.com/edicion/marca/balo...05022.html

Why is it that we are getting two versions of this story?? This one from Calderon himself. What's the real deal? thanks

Thane

Lady Byng is for sportsmanship combined with excellence of play. But great answer, thanks!

I'm going to the game Sunday, do you think it will be anything but an amazing standing O for Mo, and are they planning any tribute at all?

How is Mo doing this year, minutes, scoring etc.?

Blogger's note: There'll be lots of Mo stuff tomorrow and Sunday morning, let's wait 'til then, right now I'm at shootaround for the dawning of the Linton Johnson Era

Being ranked near last in the league for rebounding and FTs tells alot about the character of this team: i.e. complacent. The ironic thing is, Smitch was anything but complacent as a player. Hopefully the fear of losing 6th to the Sixers will actually be a good thing down the stretch, stir up a sense of urgency going into the playoffs.

Zack

Hey Doug, I thought that the Players Association picked the most sportsmanlike player from each division and then the league votes on one. Anthony Parker was nominated last year I believe and Derek Fisher won.

thomm

"I’d say Rasho’s the smartest player on the roster, Martin would have been second and I’d put Bosh third. The rest of them are young and still learning."

What if Garbo was active? Where would he fit in?

Blogger's note: He'd probably be No. 2

Joe T.

Doug, a wise, crafty veteran who’s a good guy but cynical with tinges of momentary bitterness? Are you the Sam Cassell of sportswriting, with perhaps less trash talk and more, um, job loyalty?...

And sorry to bust you, but you reprimanded someone for mispelling a player's name. So please add a "T" to "Dalember" in today's blog. Damn typos...

Blogger's note: Bus away! (Get it? Bus, not Bust!) Thanks
Sam? Okay, I'll be Sammy

GM

Shouldn't that be Dr. Jack Ramsay, the former coach of the Trailblazers? Jack McKinney was Magic Johnson's first pro coach with the Lakers, for all of 14 games until a bicycle accident.

Geoff Read

I was a bit surprised you didn't have AP on your list of "smart basketball" Raptors.

Donnie

Chris Paul for Lady Byng?
The same guy that hit Bruce Bowen in the area we not s'posed to touch?
Not like it is his first time doing it, ask Julius Hodge.
The guy hasn't changed much, except his exceptional ball skills.
Lady Byng doesn't fit him Doug.

Alex

"A wise, crafty veteran who’s a good guy but cynical with tinges of momentary bitterness?" Rasho, methinks? (not sure about the cynical part)

Mikey

Harrington is just more of what we have, jump-shooting non-rebounder's. He is an under-achiever and that is being nice.

Anthony

Sam cassell? you'd have to do the "onions" dance every time you barely beat the buzzer on your deadlines for your post game columns. Id say you'd have to go with Rasho: a cagey vet who goes the extra mile whenever his number is called (in your case, answering thousands of questions a week).
btw Doug, do you think AP should be re-signed to be a backup guard (taking into account there can only be so many 2/3's as backups on this team -AP, Delfino, kapono, Moon) or trade him as he probably has the best value contract/skill wise?

Blogger's note: They've got until the end of next season to worry about re-signing AP. That's a long, long way away

In response to Darryl A and his Philly/Cleveland going after Calderon: If I'm not mistaken, once an offer is made, the Raptors could sit on it for like two weeks. So they could pretend to hum and haw, and meanwhile Philly would lose out on all the other more attainable free agents that might get snapped up in those two weeks.

Blogger's note: The period's now one week between an offer tendered and a decision to be made.

Donnie, I agree. That's why I have never liked Chris Paul coming out of college, regardless of how his game may have improved. DWill gets my vote in anything CP3 related.

Also to Mikey, I agree about Harrington. Looking at Harrington in Golden State's system (with a green light for all players from 3) is a good indication of the type of player we would get. There are definitely better options, namely RJ, Redd, Igoudala. It would be great to see Redd come over in some type of Ford package, as Milwaukee is going nowhere. A sign and trade for Igoudala would be nice but PHI already has a PG-in-waiting in Lou Williams. Similar situation in New Jersey.

In regards to the article from the spanish paper, and the discussions here and in M. Granges article. If you translate correctly what Jose says, he said that BC and Smitch called him in to discuss the poor play of the team and what could be done. He says they agreed that he would come off the bench, and makes no comments about who initiated the idea. When asked if he could have said no, he says that he could have, or made a fuss, but that would not be best for the team.

He was asked waht he did when he left the meeting, and he answers that he discussed the issue with Bosh and Parker, and they said that if he thought it was best for the team then to go ahead, and that they supported him.

His comments regarding making a sacrifice for the team was a reponse to a question asking him to comment on his contract, and he replies that he has sacrificed for the team, and he expects to be repaid. (read max. money)

I dont think there is anything in this article that is inconsistent with what we have heard in the media here in TO.

Gerald

"I have been targeting 3’s more than 2’s, just because of our need for rebounding (offensive and defensive)"

to which doug replied:

"I’m not sure Harrington’s as athletic as they’d like but he’d sure be on my list."

Al Harrington is not a 3, and has not been since probably his senior year of high school. He is a 6 foot 9, 250 pound power forward. For the Warriors, he guards the 4 (Stephen Jackson is the 3). For the Raps, the 4 position is filled. For that matter, he averages far fewer rebounds than the Raptor incumbent at the 3, one Jamario Moon. All Harrington is no slasher.

I continue to be puzzled by people who suggest that the Raps' rebounding woes can be solved by moving out their second bet rebounder and one of the top rebounding SF's in the NBA. The real rebounding problem is in their guards and, in particular, with the 2. For all his benefits, Anthony Parker is a poor rebounder, in my judgment. He does not box out well and wins very few battles in the paint.

Anthony

I agree with all this Harrington talk. The Raps dont need another player (whatever position he happens to be playing) to drift to the three point line. They need someone to committed to getting into the lane and most importatnly they need an off the ball shot blocker who can change some shots in the paint. As for rebounding, they need bigs who have the will and instincts to go get the ball. Bosh's rebounding numbers are (slightly) down this year and our 5 (read Bargs) hasnt produced like they'd hoped.

Amanda

Gerald I think a lot of the Raptor's rebounding woes were at the 5 when Andrea was in there. 3 rebounds a night is not normal for a 5. I wouldn't be suprised if the Raps start rebounding a lot better now that Rasho's in there.

Sean Smith

Gerald, I agree with you that people are too hasty in wanting to move an above-average SF rebounder as the cure-all, but I think you are misplacing where the real problem lies. It's not in the guards, but in the "franchise".

If one is a numbers person, you see that Bosh is 18th out of all PF in the league at 8.8 RPG. If you throw in the centres he moves down to 26th in the league. Concerning, yes. But not as concerning as if you look at his per-48-minute stats. Prorated over 48 minutes, Bosh averages 11.8 RPG, which puts him at a disturbing 50th IN THE LEAGUE of those who qualify in terms of games played.

If you're not a numbers person (as we know our host Doug is not), then you will at least concede that Bosh is a slight figure that gets pushed around the gym the majority of the time. Every once in a while he grabs one of those spectacular offensive rebounds in traffic through sheer determination and great hands that make us believe he is a better rebounder than he probably is in reality.

ey Doug! we always read about the Raptors going to match any offers to Calderon but you being with the team everyday, what do you see on Calderon? Do you see him more on signing back, or going to opt out, or just cant still figure it out..

Blogger's note: I see him being here, for a good long while. And it's not like he's got an option anyway.

Rob

Doug, what about the following two trades as both these teams could use a good PG:

1. TJ and Kapono/Nesterovic to Seattle for Chris Wilcox and 1 of Earl Watson/Luke Ridnour;

2. Sign and trade with the Clippers signing Corey Maggette and trading him to Toronto for TJ.

Blogger's note: I'll think about 'em later; game's about to start

Travis

I really don't think the rebounding is as much of an issue as some people like to try and make it. Our offensive rebounding is very poor, largely because we are primarily a jump shooting team. Its easy for defenders to grab the rebounds off of 3 pters because they have lots of time to box out. Most of the best offensive rebounding teams get their points off of penetration which causes defenses to break down and allows offensive rebounders the opportunity to get in there un-boxed out. When your starting 5 for most of the year plays on the perimeter offensive rebounds aren't gonna happen all that frequently.

With that being said I would like to see the raptors play a bit more physical and rebounding is always an area that can be improved, but I don't think it is a huge issue.
